About The Position

A growing residential homebuilder based in Auburn, Alabama is seeking an experienced Director of Operations to lead residential construction operations across multiple markets. This individual will provide direct leadership to approximately eight Project Managers and will be responsible for maintaining construction speed, quality, accountability, and consistency across the production organization. The company has established construction schedules, purchasing processes, trade partner relationships, and operational systems already in place. The Director of Production will ensure systems are executed consistently, coach and develop the Project Management team, and quickly resolve the day-to-day issues that arise during residential construction. The ideal candidate will come from a medium to large residential homebuilder and bring strong construction knowledge, people leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to make timely decisions without unnecessarily escalating routine operational issues.

Requirements

Strong residential homebuilding or residential construction operations experience.
Prior experience directly managing Project Managers, Construction Managers, Builders, Superintendents, or similar field personnel.
Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple residential projects or communities simultaneously.
Strong knowledge of the residential construction process from site preparation through completion and closing.
Proven ability to manage schedules and maintain aggressive construction cycle times.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make timely, cost-conscious decisions.
Ability to operate effectively in situations where there is not always a clearly defined answer or process.
Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
Comfort working within structured systems and standardized processes.
Strong technology aptitude and comfort with ERP and construction management platforms.
Ability to work primarily from the Auburn, Alabama office.
Ability to travel periodically to active jobsites and operating markets.

Nice To Haves

Experience with a medium to large regional or national residential homebuilder.
Background in higher-end production, semi-custom, or custom residential construction.
Experience managing six to ten or more Project Managers, Builders, or Construction Managers.
Experience supporting multiple communities or geographic markets.
Experience in a Director of Construction, Director of Production, Area Construction Manager, Regional Construction Manager, Production Manager, or similar leadership position.
Experience working in a technology-forward or highly systemized residential construction organization.

Responsibilities

Lead, coach, and manage approximately eight residential Project Managers across multiple markets.
Oversee residential construction schedules and production performance at a macro level.
Maintain the company’s current construction cycle time of approximately four months from grading through closing.
Ensure homes are delivered on schedule while maintaining established quality standards.
Serve as the primary escalation point for Project Managers when issues fall outside established processes.
Quickly evaluate construction, scheduling, subcontractor, labor, and field challenges and implement practical solutions.
Create accountability across the Project Management team around schedule, quality, communication, and execution.
Develop Project Managers and improve their problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
Monitor production KPIs and identify risks that may impact schedule or quality.
Partner with senior operations leadership on production planning, staffing, and continued growth.
Work within established purchasing, vendor, scheduling, and construction processes.
Conduct periodic jobsite visits while remaining primarily based in the corporate office.
Effectively utilize ERP, scheduling, and construction management technology.
Support continued expansion into additional communities and markets.
