About The Position

This position exists in a skilled nursing facility and involves responsibility for planning, directing and supervising activities as they apply to nursing services. The work is performed under administrative direction of the Nursing Home Administrator with wide leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision and direction is exercised over all nursing home facility nursing services personnel. The incumbent does related work as required.

Requirements

• Comprehensive knowledge of professional nursing techniques and their relation to aspects of geriatric care nursing practices and skill in their application
• Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of nursing administration
• Thorough knowledge of nursing home business management practices relating to nursing service
• Good knowledge of New York State Department of Health Rules and Regulations
• Ability to supervise the administration of therapeutic measures prescribed
• Ability to secure the cooperation of others
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of others
• Sympathetic attitude toward the sick
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing and two years of supervisory experience in professional nursing activities
• Graduation from an accredited three-year school of professional nursing and three years of experience in professional nursing activities, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory position
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college with an associate’s degree in nursing and four years of experience in professional nursing activities, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory position
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A), (B), and (C) above
• Possession of a current valid license issued by the State of New York Education Department to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse at time of appointment

Responsibilities

• Directs various nursing services to insure complete and competent nursing care for patients
• Confers with facility administrator and other administrative and professional personnel to assist in establishing and reviewing policies, programs and procedures effecting patient care
• Develops and implements policies and procedures that govern the nursing services in collaboration with appropriate services
• Makes contact as necessary with nurses, physicians, patients and relatives of patients regarding the care of patients and related activities
• Maintains a close working relationship with acute care nurse management
• Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for interdisciplinary approach to the residents’ needs, treats residents’ families with respect and dignity and identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of residents and their families
• Conducts conferences with nurses to plan, interpret and review policies, programs and procedures
• Coordinates the nursing service with other activities of the facility
• Works closely with the Quality Assurance Coordinator with quality improvement functions by collecting and verifying data as needed
• Oversees the assessment of all residents and the completion and updating of the Minimum Data Sets and Care Plans
• Maintains regulatory requirements
• Represents nursing services on various joint hospital/skilled nursing facility committees as deemed appropriate by Nursing Home Administrator
• Evaluates the quality and quantity of the nursing services rendered in the facility and makes changes as necessary to meet State and Federal requirements
• Plans, directs and participates in the in-service training program, including orientation of new nursing personnel and continuing staff development
• Plans, develops, implements and controls the annual budget for the nursing personnel
• Conducts pre-employment and terminating interviews with nursing service personnel
• Conducts correspondence, keeps records and submits a variety of reports related to the nursing service
• Recommends physical facilities, equipment and supplies needed to carry on the nursing service
• Keeps abreast of new developments in medical science and nursing in order that necessary changes and adaptations may be promptly initiated and effectively executed
• Develops philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures that assure high standards of nursing care
• Encourages and supports personnel growth and development by their attendance at in-service and outside educational programs
• Leads antibiotic stewardship duties with Infection Prevention
• Chairs or actively participates in appropriate committees and meetings
• Identifies nursing problems and assists in their solution
• Provides for accurately descriptive records by on-going audits
