About The Position

The Director of Nursing is responsible for developing and implementing departmental plans, policies, procedures, goals, and objectives, ensuring compliance with regulations. This role involves developing, reviewing, and revising state-required nursing curriculum, managing the departmental budget, and determining necessary equipment for laboratory and classroom settings. The Director provides leadership in program oversight, curriculum maintenance, and student advisement, while also coordinating course offerings and student performance evaluations. Key responsibilities include establishing and maintaining agreements with clinical sites, overseeing student scheduling and assignments, and participating in student recruitment and community outreach activities. The position also serves as a liaison with community health agencies, regulatory bodies, and accrediting agencies, and is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. Collaboration with administration, staff, and faculty to improve customer service, teaching, and learning is essential. The Director will also teach nursing classes and keep leadership informed of departmental activities. Maintaining professional knowledge through research, seminars, and conferences, as well as keeping clinical and educational competencies and confidentiality, are critical aspects of this role. The Director also supervises personnel, including hiring, firing, performance evaluations, training, work allocation, and problem resolution, and manages departmental budgets and timekeeping.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Five (5) years' work experience in a senior administrative position at an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Current Registered Nursing License in New Mexico or a compact state; current CPR Certification by the American Heart Association.
  • Valid and clean state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of education for nursing programs.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of health education theory and practice.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
  • Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Ability to clearly communicate medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to collect and apply both quantitative and qualitative data in a continuous improvement process for formative evaluation purpose.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Develops departmental plans, policies, procedures, goals and objectives and ensures compliance to regulations.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises state-required nursing curriculum.
  • Achieves financial objectives by preparing and administering annual budget; presenting and justifying budget recommendations to appropriate personnel.
  • Determines required laboratory and classroom equipment needs.
  • Exercises leadership in the area of program oversight and curriculum maintenance.
  • Conducts periodic program review and maintaining appropriate assessment records.
  • Coordinates a schedule of course offerings to meet the needs of the students.
  • Provides leadership in the advisement of students and evaluation of student performance.
  • Maintains meaningful agreements with local clinical sites; oversees scheduling and assignment of students at such clinical sites.
  • Oversees, markets, and participates in regular events related to student recruitment and any other activities related to the nursing program and community outreach.
  • Coordinates admission and advisement for students in the Nursing program.
  • Serves as liaison with community health agencies, institutions and/or groups to keep abreast of community needs.
  • Serves as liaison with regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Responsible for the annual ongoing systematic development, implementation and evaluation of the total program.
  • Collaborates with administration, staff and faculty to improve efficiencies in customer services, teaching and learning for students.
  • Teaches nursing classes.
  • Keeps leadership and other departments informed of status of department activities by attending meetings and submitting reports.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Maintains clinical and educational competencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
