The Director of Nursing Operations is responsible for coordinating and managing all resources necessary to provide optimal nursing care. This includes ensuring the availability of staff, patient care supplies, and automated patient care systems. The role involves managing resources through systems management and coordinating system issues to ensure optimal patient care. Additionally, the Director is responsible for implementing innovative recruitment and retention strategies, coaching staff, and building relationships with nursing instructors and students. Optimizing the work environment through data analysis, including employee feedback and engagement index, is crucial for staff retention. The position also involves providing input and expertise in the development and evaluation of orientation and continuing education programs, coaching staff for career advancement, and assisting them in identifying goals and areas for growth. Evaluating the quality of patient care through standards of practice, patient outcomes, and other quality indicators is a key responsibility. The Director ensures appropriate resources are available for Performance Improvement initiatives and develops service strategies to improve customer and patient satisfaction. Maintaining and promoting effective relationships with patients, families, staff, medical staff, other departments, and vendors is essential. The role facilitates evidence-based nursing by creating an environment that encourages the utilization of evidence in practice and decision-making, aligning with organizational strategic goals. Recommendations for changes in nursing practice are made to shared governance councils, and the Director participates in these councils as a management representative. Achieving care management and patient loyalty targets, as well as improving employee engagement, are key performance indicators. The Director is also responsible for planning staffing needs to meet productivity benchmarks and ensuring department compliance with The Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies. Human resources responsibilities include interviewing, selection, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation, employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and morale. Developing and recommending operating and capital budgets, and controlling expenditures within approved budgets, are also part of the role. The Director must understand and adhere to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and ensure compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws. The position requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care, understanding principles of growth and development across the life span.
