About The Position

Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a network of charter schools serving students across the TK-Post Secondary continuum in the Greater MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Pueblo Nuevo Education Development Group (PNEDG) is CNCA’s resource development and capacity building arm. PNEDG invests in young people to foster personal transformation and generational social change. PNEDG staff support and build capacity for CNCA schools in achieving their vision. The organizations are grounded in the beliefs that public education is a civil right and all students deserve an excellent education that will prepare them for success in life. At CNCA/PNEDG, we recognize that lower income and immigrant communities often face institutional and cultural barriers that create impediments to students’ success, and that an excellent education must eliminate these barriers. We integrate a strong focus on progressive, research-based academics with a holistic, place-based approach to serving our students. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade. Our goal is for CNCA graduates to be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and worldview necessary to be literate, critical thinkers and independent problem solvers. The Director of Mathematics works collaboratively with the CAO, Senior Director of Teaching and Learning, and the Academics Team to support the overall development and implementation of a coherent horizontally and vertically aligned instructional program. The Director of Mathematics maintains knowledge of current research, best practices and trends on a national and state level to provide direction and guidance to the CAO, Senior Director of Teaching and Learning, and Academics Team. Ultimately, the Director of Mathematics works strategically at a systems level to implement structures and strategies to close the opportunity and achievement gap.

Requirements

  • Valid preliminary or clear California Teaching Credential required
  • Single Subject: Mathematics preferred
  • At least 3-5 years as a classroom teacher
  • Proven success as a teacher and leader in urban education as evidenced by multiple proof points across multiple years
  • Knowledge of a range of PK-12 mathematics frameworks and curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Academics Team, contributing expertise on mathematics instruction to inform the overall vision and strategy of the Academics Team and the Learning Group
  • Drive the research and development of a cohesive vision and plan for mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment in grades TK through 12
  • Contribute to the development of structures and processes to increase the level of excellence across all CNCA schools, and specifically as they relate to mathematics instruction, including coaching and professional development for site leaders
  • Monitor the effectiveness of mathematics instruction to ensure student achievement in mathematics through the use of key metrics and strategic decision-making
  • Elevate challenges that arise in the context of mathematics programming, instruction and assessment, and work with the Senior Director of Teaching and Learning to inform and improve work
  • Support the development of strategic plans for the ongoing success of the Academics Team and math instruction across CNCA schools
  • Understand and navigate the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context facing urban charter schools and the students they serve
  • Collaborate to develop and facilitate long-term, substantive, coherent professional development plans with the Academics Team
  • Set ambitious personal and professional goals and model relentless effort toward these goals, demonstrating accountability for student achievement outcomes in mathematics across the network
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Teaching and Learning to ensure that expenditures for mathematics instruction are in line with budget and priorities
  • Ensure that all mathematics program functions and projects are effectively managed
  • Contribute to preparation and presentation of regular status reports for the Executive Leadership Team and/or the Board of Directors related to CNCA student performance in mathematics
  • Manage mathematics placement policy as required by state law
  • Establish relationships with outside agencies related to mathematics instruction
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Other duties as assigned
