About The Position

The Syracuse City School District is seeking a forward-thinking and experienced instructional leader to serve as the Director of Mathematics, PreK–12. This critical leadership role supports the district’s vision for equitable, high-quality mathematics instruction across all schools. Under the direction of the Supervising Director of Mathematics, the Director will support the implementation of strategic initiatives to ensure student learning and growth for all students. The Director will collaborate with district leadership, school leaders, and instructional staff to strengthen mathematics instruction, support the implementation of curriculum, and build educator capacity. The Director will assist in developing and implementing strategic plans, facilitating professional learning, and using data-informed approaches to monitor and improve student performance. Additionally, the Director will promote collaboration, support the sharing of best practices, and contribute to the continuous improvement of a rigorous, culturally responsive, and standards-aligned mathematics program. This role plays an essential part in advancing academic outcomes and ensuring student success across the district.

Requirements

  • NYS School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) Certification.
  • Master's degree in mathematics education or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in leadership.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in teaching mathematics or a related role.
  • Proven track record of improving student achievement in mathematics.
  • Deep knowledge and experience implementing mathematics curricular resources and instructional practices aligned to the mathematical practices.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to integrate and successfully use technology to enhance curriculum development and instructional delivery and efficiency.
  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation.
  • Ability to analyze and use data to inform instructional, curricular, and professional development decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate adult learning related to best practices in mathematics instruction and implementation of curriculum and mathematical practices.
  • Support the design, coherence, and implementation of PreK–12 mathematics curriculum aligned to New York State requirements, recommendations, and the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • Support learning of adults in collaboration with the professional development office.
  • Collaborate with leadership and teams to ensure implementation of a Guaranteed and Viable curriculum.
  • Communicate effectively with various leaders and all departments.
  • Facilitate committees.
  • Assist in guiding the selection of relevant resources and materials to support mathematics learning.
  • Regularly analyze data to measure student achievement related to mathematics.
  • Use data to inform programmatic decisions and resource allocation.
  • Regularly celebrate growth.
  • Facilitate learning on the use of data to provide intervention and extension.
  • Use student achievement and teacher performance data to inform instructional strategy and provide targeted support.
  • Support schools and district level teams as Professional Learning Communities in using data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Present information to various constituent groups including the Board of Education as directed by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Support the development and coordination of mathematics curriculum PreK–12.
  • Assist with ongoing monitoring, revision, and implementation of curriculum.
  • Coordinate work with District Mathematics Coaches.
  • Provide expertise in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Support distribution and implementation of curriculum materials.
  • Collaborate with leadership to determine professional development needs.
  • Support alignment to the NYS CR-SE Framework.
  • Collaboratively support implementation of the district professional development plan.
  • Ensure delivery of meaningful professional learning.
  • Support instructional leadership sessions for building leaders.
  • Coordinate work of Mathematics Coaches related to instructional practices.
  • Support the implementation of coaching cycles.
  • Support documentation related to evaluation of curriculum and programming.
  • Assist with coordination of testing and scoring processes.
  • Respond to mathematics-related research requests as directed.
  • Support the district vision for mathematics excellence.
  • Assist in implementation of strategic plan priorities.
  • Contribute as a lead learner in district transformation efforts.
  • Support the development of district mathematics initiatives.
  • Participate in district teams and committees.
  • Maintain knowledge of current educational trends.
  • Collaborate with the Director of English Language Arts to complete yearly evaluations for all building instructional coaches (Disciplinary Literacy Coaches) as well as all Mathematics District Coaches.
  • Assist the school principals in the supervision of tenured professional staff, as needed.
  • Assist the school principals in the supervision of probationary teachers, as needed.
  • Assist in preparing, monitoring, and managing the mathematics budget.
  • Support contract implementation and vendor coordination.
  • Assist with procurement and distribution of resources.
