Director of Marketplace Operations

About The Position

Togetherhood is a marketplace connecting schools and community organizations with a network of instructors and teaching artists. This Director of Marketplace Operations role involves owning the system that matches supply and demand and powers program delivery at scale. It is a high-ownership, leadership position central to the business, responsible for efficiently recruiting, onboarding, matching, and supporting providers while meeting program demand across markets and maintaining high-quality delivery. The successful candidate will step into an existing operation with established systems and team structure, tasked with maintaining strong performance while improving and scaling operations, including refining workflows, enhancing performance visibility, and strengthening marketplace systems. The role operates as a player-coach, setting direction, improving systems, and executing when necessary. This position is a member of the leadership team, collaborating with the CEO and functional leads to drive operational performance and business growth. Success in the first 90 days involves quickly understanding the marketplace (supply/demand generation, matching, fulfillment), maintaining strong performance (fill rates, coverage, partner experience), identifying scaling opportunities, improving visibility with clear KPI reporting, and driving early process refinements for reliability, efficiency, and team clarity. The role is challenging due to operating a real-time, two-sided marketplace with dynamic supply and demand, balancing speed, cost, and quality across thousands of program sessions, coordinating multiple stakeholders (providers, schools, internal teams), scaling systems with company growth, and maintaining high-quality delivery in a live, service-based environment.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of operations experience in a startup or high-growth environment
  • Experience in a marketplace, staffing, logistics, or other supply-demand matching environment
  • Track record of owning and improving operational systems at scale
  • Strong analytical mindset and comfort working with metrics and performance data
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity and make high-quality decisions quickly
  • High ownership and bias for action
  • System-oriented operator: works within evolving tools and improves them over time, rather than building parallel workflows
  • Leverage mindset: improves efficiency through process, automation, and tools (including AI where appropriate)
  • Strong cross-functional communicator
  • NYC-based or willing to work in-person from our Midtown Manhattan office

Responsibilities

  • Own supply and demand operations: ensure we can efficiently recruit, onboard, and activate providers while meeting program demand across markets
  • Own the matching engine: oversee how providers are matched to programs, improving speed, quality, and reliability of placements
  • Own marketplace performance: drive key metrics including time to staff, fill rate, provider utilization, and program-level margins
  • Ensure quality of delivery: monitor course quality, identify where experiences fall short, and implement mechanisms to improve consistency
  • Operate within and strengthen our platform: run operations through our systems, not parallel workflows. Adopt tools, use them in practice, and provide structured feedback to improve them over time
  • Strengthen team execution: refine existing processes, meeting cadence, and ownership to improve clarity, accountability, and performance
  • Lead and develop your team: manage a growing operations team across talent, analytics, and on-site coordination
  • Operate as a player-coach: step into execution when needed and make high-quality decisions to keep the system running smoothly

Benefits

  • $145K–$175K salary + equity
  • Health, vision, and dental benefits
  • In-person team environment in Midtown Manhattan
  • The opportunity to build and scale a real-world marketplace with meaningful impact
