About The Position

This job is located in the Laboratory and Support Services Division of the Police Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of the division Major. This is an administrative and supervisory management position responsible for coordinating the operations of the forensic science laboratories within the Police Department. The employee is responsible for overseeing and administering all activities required to implement and maintain scientific quality in all procedures and operations of the forensic science laboratory and maintaining accreditation standards.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher in forensic science, a physical science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a forensic scientist role in a law enforcement agency.
  • Knowledge of and skill in applying management principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of forensic disciplines and forensic laboratory management.
  • Knowledge of and skill in directing forensic laboratory operations and related safety practices.
  • Knowledge of state and federal statutes governing criminal evidence and procedure.
  • Knowledge of and skill in applying principles and practices of evidence collection, analysis and preservation.
  • Skill in conveying written and verbal communications to professionals and residents.
  • Skill in writing management reports from analysis of research or investigations.
  • Skill in coordinating activities of a professional, technical, and clerical staff.
  • Skill in the operation and use of forensic laboratory analytical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and with other units and divisions in the department.
  • Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for confidential information.
  • Ability to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing and coordinating the allocation and utilization of personnel, equipment and material.
  • Developing the divisional goals and objectives.
  • Preparing technical reports and grant applications.
  • Evaluating the evidence examination processes and selecting training for assigned staff.
  • Monitoring policies and procedures to support the operation for continued compliance, effectiveness, and initiating change as needed.
  • Initiating procedures to enable attainment of accreditation by the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) National Accreditation Board (ANAB).
  • Communicating frequently with various members of the Police Department, the District Attorney's office, government agencies, state and federal officials and other forensic scientists to obtain or disseminate information, provide technical assistance and/or promote understanding of divisional laboratory activities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
