About The Position

FBFK is a growing, multi-state business law firm with over 150 legal professionals and staff across Texas and California, currently executing an aggressive plan to scale its people, platform, and capabilities (FBFK 2.0). This role requires a hands-on Director of HR who will own the day-to-day operations of the entire HR function. The Director will personally design, implement, and administer HRIS/payroll, compensation, performance management, benefits, and talent programs. Responsibilities include recruiting legal support talent, ensuring multi-state compliance (especially in California), directly supervising the HR Manager and HR Coordinator, and serving as the credible, responsive face of HR to partners and firm leadership. This is a high-velocity, high-accountability position for someone who thrives in a demanding environment with real stakes.

Requirements

  • Human Resources leadership experience within a law firm.
  • Hands-on experience with the full lifecycle (design, implementation, ongoing administration) of HRIS/Payroll systems, compensation programs, performance management programs, benefits selection/administration/compliance, and talent acquisition/retention programs.
  • Multi-state employment compliance experience.
  • Experience with Employee Handbook, Company Policy, and Compliance programs.
  • Experience with Safety/Security/Wellness programs.
  • Experience directly managing HR staff, including day-to-day assignment and oversight.
  • Project management experience.
  • Stakeholder management experience, including managing relationships with senior leadership without a direct reporting line.
  • Experience working in privately held, high-growth organizations.
  • Change management experience.
  • Working knowledge of California employment law and multi-state employment practices.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Strong communication skills, including with attorneys and firm leadership.
  • Willingness to travel regularly between Firm offices (25-50%).

Nice To Haves

  • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or comparable HR certification.
  • Experience working with PE-backed organizations, or directly for a PE firm.
  • International business experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own and administer core HR programs, including HRIS/Payroll systems, compensation, performance management, benefits, and talent acquisition/retention programs, from design through ongoing administration.
  • Manage the HR team, including direct supervision of the HR Manager and HR Coordinator, assigning work, setting priorities, and developing team members.
  • Recruit legal support talent by partnering with attorneys, managing the full recruiting process from job postings to offer management.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment law, with a focus on California employment law, ensuring the employee handbook, policies, and HR processes are current and compliant.
  • Administer and improve HR systems and technology, build workforce metrics and reporting for leadership.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for attorneys, administrative leaders, and staff on people-related matters, communicating effectively with senior leadership.
  • Support Firm programs, including the Summer Associate Program and other professional development and internship initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Operations, IT, and Marketing on cross-functional projects.
