About The Position

The Director of Human Resources – Labor & Employee Relations serves as the College’s senior employee and labor relations professional and is responsible for promoting a positive, respectful, and legally compliant workplace across the institution. Working in partnership with the Director of Human Resources, this position provides strategic leadership and day-to-day guidance on employee relations, labor relations, workplace investigations, performance management, and supervisor development within a unionized public higher education environment. The Director serves as the College’s subject matter expert in labor and employee relations, ensuring consistent interpretation and application of collective bargaining agreements, College policies, SUNY requirements, New York State laws, and federal employment regulations. The position partners closely with College leadership to resolve workplace concerns, mitigate organizational risk, strengthen supervisory practices, and foster an engaged, accountable workforce. The Director represents the Executive Director of Human Resources as assigned and serves as Acting Director in the Executive Director’s absence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible professional Human Resources experience with focused experience in employee and labor relations.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience managing a team.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and managing sensitive employee relations matters.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and New York State employment laws.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, coaching, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and effectively manage highly sensitive matters.
  • Knowledge of business practices and policies including budgeting, planning and organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of management and supervisory practices and principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Public Administration, Higher Education Administration, Juris Doctor with a concentration or coursework in Employment and Labor Law, or a related field.
  • Experience in SUNY or another New York State public higher education institution.
  • Experience supporting multiple bargaining units.
  • Experience with Banner HR
