About The Position

The Director of Health Services is directly responsible to the Executive Directors of Student Support Services for the planning, implementation, and supervision of the defined programs of the Health Services Department of the Wichita Public Schools. The Director assumes a leadership role in providing opportunities for pupils and staff members to develop those attitudes and practices which secure and maintain sound physical, mental, emotional and social health.

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Wichita Public Schools and is appropriate for their position
  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • Experience as a nurse or other experience within the medical field is required.

  • Leadership experience (supervision of staff, management of programs, etc.) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administers the programs within the Health Services Department
  • Plans health services programs and services; prepares and manages the department's budgets with appropriate school divisions
  • Coordinates, trains, and assists in supervising the staff of school nurses, health room assistants, and Nurse Practitioners in professional concern
  • Cooperates in the development of health programs which are funded through federal grants and other outside resources in the enhancement of the total health program
  • Serves as a liaison between the district, local, and state health departments
  • Prepares and submits local and state reports as required
  • Facilitates communications between the medical community and the school district
  • Applies for and coordinates grants and programs as appropriate
  • Encourages and provides staff development opportunities through in-service, continuing education, and other forms of educational programs related to school health
  • Researches, studies, and evaluates new school health programs and materials
  • Confers with parents, pupils, and community agencies concerning health needs of children and youth
  • Provides assistance and advice to school personnel in interpreting policies in the area of school health services
  • Provides leadership in programs to promote positive health attitudes and practices
  • Collaborates with other student support services administrators in the operation of the team approach for assessing and staffing pupils needing consideration for special program placement
  • Assists the building principal in the supervision and evaluation of school nurses
  • Organizes and conducts audits on a regular basis
  • Supervises homebound services for the district
  • Works with the Director of Pupil Transportation on health needs for students
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and oversees operations of the district employee onboarding clinic, including pre-employment physicals, drug screenings, tuberculosis (TB) testing, immunization review, and other required occupational health services
  • Oversees the district Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program, including maintenance schedules, compliance requirements, equipment inspections, and replacement of AED units and emergency medical supplies
  • Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
