POSITION SUMMARY The HSSE Director leads the division’s health, safety, security, environmental, and compliance management system. This role standardizes processes, strengthens regulatory readiness, and protects employees, customers, contractors, assets, and the environment. The role oversees training, audits, DOT compliance, incident management, corrective actions, and continuous improvement in partnership with Operations, Logistics, Fleet, HR, Supply Chain, and senior leadership. This hands-on role requires regular field presence to observe work, coach employees, identify risk, and reinforce safe execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, Risk Management, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Five or more years of HSSE, EHS, occupational safety, transportation safety, regulatory compliance, or safety-sensitive operations experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with DOT compliance, transportation safety, audits, corrective actions, regulatory documentation, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
  • Experience developing and supporting safety training, onboarding, cross-training, field competency assessments, refreshers, and job aids.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, EPA, NFPA 58, Hazmat, PHMSA, PERC, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, analysis, technical writing, coaching, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Comfortable working regularly in bulk storage plants, delivery routes, customer sites, service centers, and field locations.
  • Required certifications: OSHA 30-Hour General Industry; DOT Compliance and Hazmat, as applicable; PERC CETP for propane delivery and service, or completion within 90 days.

Nice To Haves

  • Leadership, supervisory, coaching, or team development experience preferred.
  • Propane/LPG, energy, transportation, utilities, logistics, or industrial operations experience preferred; propane experience strongly preferred.
  • Preferred certifications: CSP, ASP, CHMM, First Aid/CPR/AED, Lean, Six Sigma, CI, or leadership certification.

Responsibilities

  • HSSE governance, policies, SOPs, controls, and compliance
  • Training, cross-training, onboarding, certifications, and competency validation
  • Field safety leadership, ride-alongs, observations, coaching, and risk prevention
  • Site audits, DOT compliance, regulatory documentation, and corrective actions
  • Incident management, investigations, root cause analysis, and lessons learned
  • Emergency response, PPE, contractor safety, and propane-specific risk controls
  • HSSE dashboards, KPIs, audit trends, and continuous improvement
  • Team leadership, staffing readiness, and peak-season coverage support
  • Own HSSE governance, policies, SOPs, documentation, controls, and compliance with NFPA 58, PERC, DOT/FMCSA, PHMSA, OSHA, EPA, and applicable state requirements.
  • Develop and support safety training, onboarding, toolbox talks, job aids, field guides, certification tracking, competency validation, and refresher schedules.
  • Build and maintain cross-training plans that support front-line readiness, peak-season coverage, and safe execution across locations.
  • Provide field HSSE leadership through ride-alongs, bulk storage plant walks, route observations, customer site reviews, equipment inspections, coaching, and risk prevention.
  • Manage site audits, DOT safety compliance, risk assessments, corrective actions, validation, trend analysis, regulatory documentation, and agency support.
  • Serve as escalation lead for injuries, vehicle incidents, environmental events, property damage, near misses, and urgent HSSE concerns.
  • Lead investigations, determine root causes, assign and monitor corrective actions, and communicate lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain HSSE scorecards, dashboards, executive reports, incident trends, DOT metrics, and continuous improvement plans.
  • Lead, coach, and develop assigned HSSE personnel while partnering with HR and Operations on labor, certification, fit-for-duty, and peak-season staffing needs.
  • Ensures Territory Operations follow company safety policies, propane-specific codes, DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, Hazmat, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Reinforces training, validates compliance through audits and observations, investigates incidents, identifies risk trends, and drives corrective actions that strengthen safety culture and prevent recurrence.
