About The Position

MNP Community & Sport Centre is seeking a Director of Fitness & Training to set the strategic direction and structure for the organization’s Fitness & Training portfolio. This role functions within a strategic and policy framework established by the CPO, CEO, and the Board. The Director will provide leadership and direction to the portfolio managers and their teams, including hiring, training, mentoring, coaching, and performance management. This position is accountable for managing activities consistent with established mission, goals, objectives, and policies, and will develop, implement, and monitor financial operating and capital budgets for the portfolio. The role involves developing new and evolving programming and services based on the strategic plan, customer feedback, customer-centered initiatives, competitive analysis, and research on current trends. Additionally, the Director will develop, implement, and monitor strategic and operational plans, processes, and procedures to improve and standardize business activities, cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, and ensure the ongoing protection of the Lindsay Park Sports Society. The Director will also act as an effective public relations person, a contributing member of the Senior Leadership Team, and participate in facility-wide teamwork and collaboration. This role includes providing operational support for the LEAP project, collaborating with project teams, and leading department-specific readiness initiatives for LEAP, including equipment procurement and commissioning, staffing plans, operating procedures, training, and change management.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrates expertise in providing organizational and department leadership.
  • Financial acumen to make sound business decisions and to provide accurate and detailed financial information.
  • Highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and people management skills.
  • Proactive - ability to analyze and anticipate problems before they present themselves.
  • Strong decision making and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Post-secondary education in a related area such as Business Administration, Sport Administration, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in an environment with multiple business units/departments.
  • Has networks in the sport and recreation, fitness and/or health industries.
  • Accountability for results and driving change.

  • Preference for a Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge with the Avocado system will be considered an asset.
  • Sport and recreation operational experience and certifications.
  • Knowledge of recreation software such as Avocado, Intelligenz, Technogym, etc. will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Sets strategic direction, and structure for the organization’s Fitness & Training portfolio in conjunction with the CPO.
  • Provides leadership and direction to the portfolios managers (Manager of Fitness and Manager of Performance & Training) and their teams including hiring, training, mentoring, coaching, and performance management.
  • Accountable for managing (through direction and coordination), activities consistent with established mission, goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Develops, implements and monitors the financial operating and capital budgets for the portfolio.
  • Develops new and / or evolving programming and services based on the strategic plan, customer feedback, customer-centered initiatives, competitive analysis, and research on current trends.
  • Develops, implements and monitors strategic and operational plans, processes and procedures in accordance with organizational and portfolio goals in order to improve and standardize business activities.
  • Cultivates existing and current relationships central to business need with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors operational processes and procedures to ensure attainment of business plans, budgets, established timeframes and departmental improvements.
  • Contributes to organizational strategy and policy development.
  • Responsible to actively monitor and question the business practices, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the ongoing protection of the Lindsay Park Sports Society.
  • Be an effective public relations person for MNP Community and Sport Centre and communicate effectively and courteously with staff, public, board members and sport partners.
  • Be an effective, contributing member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Chair the monthly Manager’ Meeting on a rotating basis with other Directors.
  • Actively contribute to facility-wide teamwork and collaboration.
  • Act as Facility Supervisor (e.g., Fire Warden) on designated shifts.
  • Ensure facility-wide safety and emergency procedures are followed.
  • Build relationships with Leaders of like facilities to share information and gather competitive intelligence.
  • Participate as the Dryland operational support for LEAP (Leisure Expansion Aquatics Project), providing subject matter expertise on facility design, equipment planning, operational readiness, and the guest experience to ensure new spaces support current and future programming needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional project teams, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders to support project milestones, commissioning activities, operational planning and a seamless transition into new or renovated fitness and training spaces.
  • Lead department-specific readiness initiatives for LEAP, including equipment procurement and commissioning, staffing plats, operating procedures, training and change management to ensure successful launch and ongoing operations.
  • Perform other duties as required.
