About The Position

The Director of Finance, under the guidance of the CFO, is responsible for overseeing all matters related to the fiscal operations, functions, planning, and budgeting of the agency. The position ensures the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements, and effective stewardship of organizational resources. The Director of Finance partners with leadership to support informed decision-making and long-term financial sustainability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
  • Experience managing audits, budgets and financial reporting.
  • Supervisory or management experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Understanding of grant compliance and fund accounting requirements.
  • Advanced proficiency with financial management systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA, MBA, or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting and grant management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee all financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, grant tracking and cash management
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Prepare financial analysis and recommendations for executive leadership.
  • Prepare documents and participate in finance committee meetings.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard the organizations' assets.
  • Provides direct supervision, coaching, and support to finance staff, including conducting regular check-ins, performance reviews, development planning, and addressing team conflicts in alignment with policies and procedures.
  • Partners with executive leadership to establish and achieve organizational goals, offering expert guidance.
  • Actively participates in leadership team meetings and contributes to organizational strategy, policy development, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with departments and divisions to advance agency-wide initiatives and objectives.
  • Exercise sound judgment and make informed decisions within the scope of responsibility and subject matter expertise.
  • Models’ leadership that reflects and promotes Food Bank of Central New York’s core values and strategic vision.
  • Monitors and manages departmental resource needs, budget considerations, and grant compliance requirements.
  • Oversee accounting and financial reporting for grants, contracts, and donor-restricted funds.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local and private funding requirements.
  • Support the development of grant applications and reporting requirements.
  • Lead the annual budget development process in partnership with department leaders.
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide variance analysis.
  • Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Represents the Food Bank in relevant forums at the local, state, and national levels, serving as a subject matter expert and point of contact.
