About The Position

The Director of Finance, reporting to the Executive Director, is responsible for overseeing all accounting and reporting activities and serves as a key member of the University Corporation senior leadership team. This role acts as the Corporation’s business officer, providing leadership for fiscal management, budget development, general accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, banking and investment relations, internal and external auditing, accounting operations, and long-range forecasting and planning. The Director will create and evaluate financial reports, presenting them to senior management, the UCorp board, and campus-wide, making recommendations as needed. This position leads the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, supervising a team of seven, and is responsible for the chart of accounts, accounting transactions for three entities, reporting, and payroll. The Director oversees all transactions for UCorp's approximately $50 million in assets, ensures appropriate policies and procedures, and continually reviews and strengthens internal controls. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with GAAP, GASB, FASB, and California State University systems, rules, and regulations for audited financial statements and serves as the lead contact for the yearly external audit. The Director will collaborate with other department managers to educate them on finance and accounting procedures and ensure accounting systems are functioning appropriately, with PeopleSoft as the current accounting system and Financial Data Warehouse as a reporting tool.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree/equivalent in accounting, finance management, economics or related field.
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in an accounting position where substantial judgment, analysis, interpretation, integration of complex data and information was required.
  • Experience handling full charge accounting duties.
  • Demonstrated competence in the areas of finance, and accounting.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles practices for a non-profit or governmental environment (i.e. FASB and GASB).
  • Experience identifying, recommending, and implementing corrective or preventive action in regard to an accounting system or procedure.
  • Experience handling investments related to an endowment fund over 100 million dollars.
  • Knowledge processing and supervising the processing of payroll.
  • Proficient with computer applications (i.e., excel, word, access, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated competency of well-developed written and oral skills.
  • Ability to build and enhance business relationships.
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reports, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and accounting for investments.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and meet project deadlines and manage multiple tasks with continual interruptions.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States, within three business days from their date of hire.

  • Handle the functional responsibility for the chart of accounts, all accounting transactions for three entities serviced by UCorp, reporting, and payroll.
  • Oversee all transactions associated with UCorp's assets of approximately $50 million.
  • Ensure UCorp has appropriate policies and procedures in place, including continually reviewing and strengthening internal controls related to accounting processes.
  • Ensure UCorp is in full compliance with GAAP, GASB, FASB, Federal State and California State University systems, rules, and regulations in the preparation of the Auxiliaries audited financial statements.
  • Serve as the lead contact in managing the yearly external audit.
  • Work closely with other department managers and staff within UCorp to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and explore how finance and accounting can support operations.
  • Ensure that all accounting systems are working appropriately.
  • Lead and direct day-to-day activities of seven direct reports, including two leads.
  • Leverage strengths of the current accounting team members, clarify roles and responsibilities to maximize individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide strategic direction to the team by identifying processes and procedures for revision, recognizing team member performance, providing training, evaluation and support, and developing team work flows and processes.
  • Review and oversee work related to accounting transactions affecting the balance sheet, statement of revenue and expenses, change in net assets, cash receipts, and fixed assets and reconciliations for three business units.
  • Conduct performance evaluations.
  • Foster and promote the Principles of Conduct for a Multi-Cultural University and User-Friendly Principles.
  • Promote, ensure, and enforce PP&D application of appropriate industry professional responsibilities and ethical standards.
  • Lead University-wide committees and work teams as directed or appropriate.
  • Represent the Executive Director as directed or appropriate on university/community committees and work groups.
  • Lead and support work of peers within the organization, which cross accounting by providing review and approval of journals for appropriateness and accuracy.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance to GAAP, GASB, and FASB standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Produce financial statements in GASB and FASB format.
  • Consistently analyze financial data presented and oversee financial reporting to ensure information presented is accurate and in a timely manner.
  • Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, annual financial deadlines.
  • Monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of UCorp, AS and Foundation financial status.
  • Make recommendations to improve fiscal operations when warranted.
  • Oversee and manage all audit activity for the annual audit for the three auxiliaries and provide leadership and direction to the team for audit preparation.
  • Engage the board’s audit and finance committees regarding UCorp’s financial statement analysis, carrying out board directed activities and internal controls.
  • Review, assess, and implement new accounting pronouncements that apply to UCorp business.
  • Create and maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, payroll, and actual expenditures.
  • Oversee the fixed assets program which involves staff recording appropriately to the G/L, tagging and bi-annual physical inventory.
  • Prepare, review, analyze and present financial reports as requested for three auxiliaries.
  • Partner with and lead UCorp division administrators in the development, execution and on-going review of strategic initiative identification, planning, and development.
  • Prepare and review preparation of tax returns for three auxiliaries (e.g., 990).
  • Provide support as necessary in the preparation of various tax schedules such as 1099, 1042’s, and 592 by the accounts payable team.
  • Represent UCorp Executive Director on campus committees or work groups, and outside agencies, as directed.
  • Attend conferences and seminars, as directed.
