About The Position

Baystate Health is seeking a visionary and strategic Director of Facilities, Planning, & Design to lead the planning, design, and transformation of more than 5 million square feet of healthcare facilities across five hospitals and 85 outpatient and administrative locations throughout Western Massachusetts. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced healthcare planning and design leader to influence how care is delivered for years to come. You'll partner with executive leaders, clinical stakeholders, architects, engineers, and regulatory agencies to create innovative, flexible, and patient-centered environments that support Baystate Health's mission, growth strategy, and evolving healthcare delivery models.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in healthcare facilities planning, design, or related healthcare environments
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in architecture, planning, or healthcare facility design
  • Minimum 3 years of civil engineering experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing projects, teams, and complex stakeholder relationships
  • Bachelors Degree

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Architect (Massachusetts preferred)
  • Master's Degree in Architecture or related field

Responsibilities

  • Lead System-Wide Facility Planning: Direct Baystate Health's Master Facility Planning efforts, ensuring facilities align with organizational growth strategies, market demands, and future healthcare trends.
  • Collaborate with executive and operational leaders to develop facility solutions that support current and future clinical, administrative, and patient care needs.
  • Develop and support capital planning initiatives in partnership with Facilities and Engineering leadership.
  • Lead consultant selection processes, including RFQs and RFPs for architects, engineers, and other design professionals.
  • Drive Healthcare Design Excellence: Evaluate facility and space requests across inpatient, outpatient, and administrative locations.
  • Develop and oversee conceptual planning, design standards, space utilization strategies, and occupancy solutions.
  • Partner closely with Real Estate Services, Strategic Planning, Construction Services, Information Technology, Legal, and operational leaders to advance planning initiatives.
  • Guide complex relocations, restacking efforts, and phased occupancy plans while ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Establish and maintain design standards that support operational efficiency, flexibility, and exceptional patient experiences.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance & Readiness: Lead facility planning components of Determination of Need (DON) applications and amendments.
  • Serve as a key liaison with internal and external legal partners regarding regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory thresholds and compliance considerations for inpatient and ambulatory facilities.
  • Support accreditation readiness efforts, including Joint Commission and CMS surveys and site visits.
  • Lead Space Planning & Allocation Strategy: Oversee space planning, adjacency planning, occupancy management, and facility utilization initiatives across the system.
  • Collaborate with the Space Allocation Committee to optimize existing space and identify future opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate space planning data and occupancy information to support strategic decision-making.
  • Develop solutions that maximize space efficiency while supporting collaboration, innovation, and operational effectiveness.
  • Oversee Furniture, Moves & Workplace Planning: Establish system-wide furniture, workspace, and space utilization standards.
  • Lead teams responsible for move planning, furniture management, occupancy planning, and workplace transitions.
  • Ensure effective coordination among project managers, designers, construction teams, and operational stakeholders.
  • Drive initiatives that improve workplace functionality and support evolving workforce needs.
  • Lead & Develop a High-Performing Team: Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to planning and design staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Align team assignments with organizational priorities and employee development goals.
  • Manage departmental operating and capital budgets while ensuring effective resource utilization.

Benefits

  • The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect to start somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees. Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum $158,371.00 - $182,041.00 - $215,342.00
