About The Position

The Director of Evangelization – OCIA, Adult Faith Formation and Young Adult Ministry is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive vision for adult faith formation, evangelization, and community building at St. Mary Catholic Church. This role leads the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA/RCIA), fosters vibrant Young Adult Ministry (ages 18–35), and supports broader adult discipleship through small groups, retreats, sacramental preparation, and ongoing formation. The Director works collaboratively with the Pastor, parish staff, and volunteers to create pathways for encounter with Jesus Christ, conversion, and lifelong growth in the Catholic faith, in alignment with the mission of St. Mary Parish and the Diocese of Columbus.

Requirements

  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with a vibrant personal faith and commitment to the New Evangelization.
  • Active member of a Catholic parish.
  • Passion for accompanying others in their faith journey and a lifestyle consistent with Church teachings.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred) in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Education, Catechetics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2–4 years of relevant experience in parish ministry, with strong preference for OCIA/RCIA experience.
  • Certification as a catechist in the Diocese of Columbus (or willingness to obtain) and advanced religious education certification preferred.
  • Experience developing and implementing adult learning programs from planning to evaluation.
  • Exceptional public speaking, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, volunteer recruitment, and leadership abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office/Google Workspace; familiarity with digital communication and evangelization tools.
  • Collaborative team player who works well with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with prudence.
  • Available for evening and weekend work (RCIA sessions, young adult events, retreats).
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and participate in ongoing formation and continuing education.
  • Successful completion of BCI&I background check and Protecting God’s Children program prior to employment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the full OCIA process, guiding inquirers, catechumens, and candidates through all stages of formation and initiation.
  • Recruit, train, spiritually form, and supervise a team of catechists, sponsors.
  • Coordinate liturgical rites (Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, Election, Scrutinies, etc.) in collaboration with the Pastor and Liturgy Director.
  • Conduct initial interviews, assess individual needs, and tailor formation accordingly.
  • Ensure fidelity to Church documents on the OCIA, educate the parish community on its importance, and maintain connections with the diocesan OCIA team and national resources.
  • Update sacramental information in the parish system and record books.
  • Design and lead a dynamic, engaging ministry for young adults (ages 18–35, single and married) focused on intentional discipleship, community, and mission.
  • Organize regular events including Theology on Tap, small faith-sharing groups, prayer experiences, social gatherings, and service opportunities.
  • Accompany young adults in vocational discernment (marriage, priesthood, religious life, single life) and the discovery of their charisms.
  • Collaborate with neighboring parishes and the Diocese of Columbus Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry for larger events and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement programs that help adults encounter Christ and grow in knowledge and love of the Catholic faith.
  • Plan seasonal missions, retreats, Bible studies, speaker series, and other formation opportunities.
  • Train and mentor parishioners to lead small groups and pastoral initiatives.
  • Maintain relationship with Together in Holiness representative via monthly meetings (this would go through February or beyond pending contract renewal).
  • Coordinate adult sacramental preparation (e.g., Adult Confirmation, Marriage Prep) in partnership with the Pastor and other staff.
  • Manage the annual budget for OCIA, Young Adult Ministry, and related adult formation programs with prudent stewardship.
  • Oversee scheduling, communications (bulletin, website, Flocknote, social media), and registration for all programs.
  • Ensure full compliance with diocesan Safe Environment / Protecting God’s Children policies, including background checks and volunteer training.
  • Work collaboratively with the full faith formation team (Youth Ministry, Parish School of Religion, School, Liturgy) and parish administrative staff.
  • Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and participate in staff meetings.
