Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX
About The Position
The Director of Equal Opportunity will play a key role in continuing to shape the College’s vision of a single, central office responsible for integrating civil rights compliance with a trauma-informed, supportive culture of care. The Director will develop and administer policy, oversee the intake, investigation and resolution of complaints of discrimination and harassment involving students, faculty and staff, coordinate institution-wide training and prevention education, and foster an equitable, inclusive campus climate. This is a highly visible, pan-institutional role that will engage, collaborate and coordinate with various campus constituencies, including the Vice President of Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity, Wyckoff Center Director, Campus Safety, Human Resources, Athletics, Residential Life, Campus Life and Engagement, Student Accessibility Services, The Learning Commons, academic leadership and the General Counsel, among others.
Requirements
- JD or Master’s Degree in higher education, law, human resources, social work or a related field required.
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Title IX administration, civil rights compliance, equal opportunity, HR/employee relations, higher education administration, law or investigations.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state laws related to unlawful discrimination and harassment, Section 504, Title IX, Clery, VAWA, Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE Act), NY State ‘Enough is Enough,” Title VII, Title VI and related state laws pertaining to prohibit unlawful discrimination and forms of interpersonal violence.
- Demonstrated ability to track and interpret rapidly changing laws, guidance and regulations.
- Experience developing and/or implementing civil rights policy and overseeing or delivering training to diverse audiences.
- Experience conducting or overseeing sensitive investigations and applying an evidentiary standard to reach sound, well-documented determinations.
- Advanced written and verbal communications skills to work with diverse campus audiences at all levels of the institution, as well as proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office Suite.
Nice To Haves
- Title IX Coordinator, investigator, hearing officer or civil rights investigator certification(s) preferred.
- Experience in a small liberal arts environment serving both student and employee matters preferred.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of interpersonal violence, the impact of trauma interviewing, investigation techniques, and analyses of evidence to determine policy violations is preferred.
- Familiarity with case-management systems and civil rights data reporting preferred.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all legally required training is delivered and, where regulations require, published publicly
- Train and functionally direct the deputy-coordinator network in Student Affairs, Human Resources, and the Dean of the Faculty’s office
- Oversee a single, centralized intake process for reports involving students, faculty and staff.
- Oversee the investigation, informal/alternative/restorative resolution and formal grievance processes, ensuring impartiality, timeliness and freedom from conflict or bias.
- Provide strategic direction for the College's Equal Opportunity and Title IX prevention programming.
- Steward partnerships with community engagement partners, including the Wyckoff Center, Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, Human Resources, the Dean of Faculty’s office and Center for Leadership in Teaching and Learning, Student Accessibility Services, the Learning Commons, Health Promotion and the Counseling Center
- Own the integrity of the records-management system(s) for both student and employee matters.
- Coordinate with the Clery Act compliance function on VAWA-related crimes reporting, the Annual Security Report and timely warnings
- Convene and chair the multidisciplinary assessment and case-management team (Equal Opportunity Team) and serve on College-level shared governance committees as requested
- Ensure compliance with all annual compliance certifications, aggregate data reports, and periodic campus climate surveys
