Director of Engineering

Leap
•$200,000 - $225,000

About The Position

Leap is hiring a Director of Engineering to lead day-to-day engineering delivery across approximately 35 engineers on seven teams, most staffed through offshore partner teams. The role is the VP of Engineering’s number two and works closely with the VP, who retains responsibility for direction, architecture, technical bets, the hiring bar, and budget. The Director owns delivery and the operating practices that help the department deliver stable features quickly, while contributing experience and constructive challenge to the VP’s direction. The Director leads team leads and engineers, establishes clear expectations, coaches and develops people, and ensures decisions and ownership are distributed across teams. The role oversees delivery commitments with Product and FinTech, production practices including releases, alerting, on-call, and incident reviews, and consistent delivery and specification reviews. It also manages partner-team priorities, quality, and engineer development; runs hiring and onboarding within the VP’s hiring framework; and establishes shared practices, tools, and infrastructure across teams. This is a hands-on player-coach role: the Director is expected to write code every week, for a significant part of their time, building alongside engineers with AI coding agents. The work should be meaningful but not create a dependency that stalls when the Director shifts to leadership responsibilities. Leap’s products include Leap CRM, SalesPro, Leap Pay and financing, and Leap Crew, an AI product live with paying customers. The position requires authorization to work in the US and the ability to keep Eastern time zone hours. Compensation is based on experience, skills, and qualifications; the stated pay range is $200,000–$225,000 USD.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years managing engineers, including managers or team leads.
  • Experience running an engineering organization of 15 or more engineers, including offshore partner teams.
  • Experience owning delivery for a product company, including explaining commitments, shipped work, and responses when the two did not match.
  • Experience owning production practices, including releases, alerting, on-call, and incident review.
  • Ability to design operating systems such as cadences, measures, and reviews that support reliable commitments, and to remove processes that no longer help.
  • Experience coaching team leads, with examples of people who reported to you going on to run teams.
  • Engineering background and continued hands-on coding; ability to review pull requests and specifications, assess design quality and risk, and earn engineers’ trust in your judgment.
  • Experience using AI coding agents in personal engineering work, assessing their strengths and weaknesses, adapting their use, and bringing a team along or currently doing so.
  • Low-ego leadership, willingness to raise difficult issues early, and ability to help colleagues—including the manager—improve.
  • Authorization to work in the US and ability to keep Eastern time zone hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in vertical SaaS, home services, or contractor-facing software.
  • Experience with payments or lending and security programs such as SOC 2 and PCI DSS.
  • Experience operating old and new systems side by side and retiring legacy systems without disrupting the business.
  • Experience with trunk-based development, feature flags, or the listed technology stack: TypeScript, Node, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS.
  • Experience at a growth-stage, investor-backed company, reporting engineering results to the executive team and board.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day engineering delivery across about 35 engineers on seven teams, including offshore partner teams.
  • Agree with Product on delivery measures, report delivery weekly, and manage progress against roadmap commitments with Product and FinTech.
  • Lead team leads and engineers, set expectations, coach employees, and address performance when expectations are not met.
  • Push decisions and ownership down to team leads and engineers, supporting work from specification through delivery to customers.
  • Own production practices, including releases, alerting, on-call, and incident reviews; track product-specific targets for uptime, recovery time, time to production, and release quality.
  • Ensure every significant production incident receives a written review.
  • Run delivery reviews and specification reviews, ensuring agreed work is built while the VP of Engineering makes architecture decisions.
  • Work with partner-team leadership on priorities, quality, and the growth of partner engineers within Leap teams.
  • Run hiring and onboarding, bringing new engineers up to the expected bar; the VP sets the bar and approves senior hires.
  • Establish shared engineering practices, tools, and infrastructure across teams, retaining processes that fit the organization and removing those that slow teams down.
  • Write code every week for a significant portion of the role, building alongside engineers with AI coding agents while avoiding work that creates a bottleneck.
  • Contribute experience and constructive pushback to the VP of Engineering’s direction and help make the department operate effectively day to day.
