About The Position

The Director of Engineering will lead and unify engineering across APX’s multi-site manufacturing platform. This role is responsible for building systems, strengthening execution, and developing a high-performing team of mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers. This leader will move APX from people-dependent execution to process-driven performance, ensuring engineering supports scalable growth, operational discipline, and customer success. You will oversee a team of up to 7-10 engineers across multiple facilities, driving consistency in quoting, design, release, and production support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related)
  • 7–10+ years of engineering experience in manufacturing
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams
  • Experience in multi-site or complex manufacturing environments
  • Strong understanding of fabrication, machining, or industrial systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in metal fabrication, OEM, or industrial manufacturing
  • Exposure to ERP/MRP systems (engineering integration strongly preferred)
  • Lean / Six Sigma mindset (formal certification a plus)
  • Experience scaling engineering within a growing organization

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, manufacturing)
  • Establish clear roles, accountability, and performance expectations across sites
  • Build bench strength through coaching, mentoring, and talent development
  • Foster a “one team” engineering culture across all business units
  • Develop and implement standardized engineering processes across all facilities: Quoting & feasibility review, Design & drawing standards, Change management & revision control, Release to production workflows
  • Drive consistency in ERP/MRP engineering integration
  • Eliminate variability and reduce reliance on tribal knowledge
  • Partner closely with Operations, Sales, and Production teams
  • Ensure engineering is aligned to: Production schedules, Material readiness, Customer specifications, Design for manufacturability
  • Support plant stabilization efforts (especially in high-variability environments)
  • Improve first-pass yield, lead times, and on-time delivery
  • Support pre-sale engineering validation and scope clarity
  • Reduce risk from: Scope gaps, Underestimated engineering hours, Revision-driven margin erosion
  • Act as a technical resource for key customers and complex projects
  • Lead initiatives to improve: Engineering throughput, Cycle times, Cost accuracy, Design automation
  • Implement metrics and KPIs for engineering performance
  • Support APX’s transition to a scalable $100M+ platform
