About The Position

OPSWAT is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the engineering efforts for MetaDefender Managed File Transfer, a secure managed file transfer solution used by governments and critical infrastructure operators. This role is a hands-on, technically-centric leadership position with full accountability for the product's architecture, delivery, and quality across various deployment form factors (air-gapped, cross-domain, internet-connected, and native-cloud). The ideal candidate is an AI-native engineering leader with experience in orchestrating AI agents for the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and a proven track record of shipping production systems. This role involves defining how to build the product, owning the end-to-end delivery of the roadmap, and fostering a high-performance, AI-native development culture. The Director will report to the VP, Products, and lead a distributed team across Romania, Vietnam, and Hungary. The role can be based anywhere, with a preference for the UK, USA, or near an OPSWAT-operated location.

Requirements

  • Full agentic development experience: personally run a full agentic, AI-powered SDLC end to end in B2B and high-security enterprise environments.
  • A product launched via a full AI-powered SDLC: demonstrable experience taking a product from spec to release using an end-to-end AI-assisted lifecycle.
  • Proven engineering leadership: 8+ years of software engineering experience and 3+ years leading engineering teams (including managing managers/leads) through complex product delivery at scale.
  • Performance-based leadership: a track record of building high-performing teams through rigorous, fair performance management.
  • Deep technical excellence: strong, current software engineering fundamentals, including design patterns, SOLID principles, and modern architecture.
  • Scalable systems experience: a proven history building scalable, distributed solutions, including relational/document databases, cloud-native services, and modern CI/CD systems.
  • Quality and test discipline: a high bar for tested, maintainable code, utilizing AI to accelerate test scaffolding and validating coverage.
  • Distributed-team leadership: demonstrated ability to lead and align engineers across countries and time zones.
  • Talent magnet and clear communicator: ability to identify strong engineers, attract them, and create an environment for them to do their best work, while communicating technical decisions effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Security-conscious by default: holding the team to a security-first bar on design, code review, and incident response.

Nice To Haves

  • Domain familiarity: experience with managed file transfer, secure content delivery, data security, or critical infrastructure markets.
  • .NET / C# ecosystem: hands-on or managerial experience with .NET Core / C#.
  • Cloud-native and containers: experience leading the design or operation of cloud-native SaaS platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure/GCP), including using AI agents for infrastructure and deployment automation.
  • AI context-file authoring: experience writing AI context files that encode architecture decisions and forbidden patterns for consistent, safe AI output.
  • AI in CI/CD pipelines: familiarity running AI agents inside pipelines for tasks like auto-fixing lint, generating missing tests, or running safe migrations.
  • International team experience: a track record of building and maintaining engineering culture and delivery quality across multiple countries and time zones.
  • Async and high-throughput systems: experience validating concurrency and thread-safety in high-throughput services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead as an AI-first effort, making AI agents a first-class part of the team's workflow for creating specs, generating code and tests, verifying results, and running reviews, while ensuring human ownership and validation of all shipped code.
  • Stay hands-on by remaining directly involved in the codebase, setting architecture patterns, writing and reviewing critical code, prototyping, and resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of the product roadmap, managing execution sequencing, technical risk, quality, security, and releases across all deployment form factors.
  • Drive the architecture and technology choices for a product serving high-assurance environments at scale, holding a strong engineering point of view.
  • Build and lead a high-performance team by recruiting, developing, and retaining top engineers and their leads across Romania, Vietnam, and Hungary, establishing clear career paths and norms for code quality and review.
  • Drive performance-based management with clear, measurable expectations and a rigorous, fair performance culture.
  • Champion a security-first quality bar, including rigorous code review for both human-written and AI-generated code, focusing on security vulnerabilities.
  • Raise engineering velocity by continuously improving CI/CD pipelines, AI-assisted development workflows, incident response, and operational maturity.
  • Codify AI-native practices for the broader engineering portfolio by establishing playbooks, AI context files, coding harnesses, test frameworks, and review norms.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product Management, Design, and security leaders to translate the product roadmap into engineering execution, commit to scope and timelines, and manage trade-offs.

Benefits

  • Attractive compensation with regular performance assessments and flexibility for the right candidate.
  • Worldwide, remote-friendly role with a preference for the UK, USA, or a location near an OPSWAT-operated country.
  • Stable, growing international company with an exceptional customer base across 50+ countries.
  • A mandate to build AI-native engineering practices with latitude to do it your way.
