Director of Energy Management

UNC-Chapel Hill•Chapel Hill, NC

About The Position

The Director of Energy Management oversees the supervision, maintenance, operations, and strategic planning of the Energy Management section. The section is responsible for energy conservation activities; commissioning building automation, lighting, and building-envelope systems for new capital construction; targeted retro-commissioning of building HVAC and controls; management of energy conservation projects; and review of energy models and life-cycle cost analyses. The Director works with Facilities Engineering on design guidelines that incorporate energy-conservation targets and best practices, and provides daily engineering support to Facilities Services maintenance personnel across the UNC–CH main campus, associated outlying facilities, and Carolina North. The role leads the development and implementation of rules, policies, and procedures in response to changes in campus energy-management programs, and develops solutions to complex engineering and operational problems on a large research campus. The position oversees State-mandated energy reporting, including annual energy and water consumption and cost reports, performance reporting for completed energy projects, and identification, prioritization, and cost analysis of proposed conservation projects. It also conducts campus outreach on energy policies, best practices, and strategies for meeting mandated conservation goals. The Director participates in and mentors RESPC, collaborates with the EcoStudio independent-study program on student projects and internships, conducts energy-data analysis including use of an energy dashboard, and works with Sustainable Carolina to advance University sustainability goals. The Director manages a staff of six, including professional engineers, designers, commissioning technicians, and a data analyst, and supervises other project managers.
