About The Position

KIPP Capital Region is seeking a Director of Diverse Learners to oversee the strategic direction, compliance, and instructional quality of services for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and other specialized needs across schools and the region. This role involves regional leadership, instructional leadership, curriculum and program implementation, compliance and policy leadership, data use, strategic vision, and family/community partnership. The goal is to ensure all students have access to high-quality education and support to thrive in college, career, and beyond, while furthering anti-racism, equity, and racial justice.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in special education, counseling, or a related field from an accredited College or University.
  • A minimum of 2–5 years of school leadership and professional management experience.
  • Proven track record in special education in a high performing school, preferably in the charter, private, or public school environment.
  • Deep understanding of best practices for autistic students, language based learning disabilities, and tiered interventions (MTSS/RTI).
  • Proven outstanding leadership and management skills, particularly in building teams, working through others, promoting collaboration, managing conflict, goal setting, and holding people accountable.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated success in building a program, department or organization.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Read, write, and speak English fluently.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience working directly with students, preferably required in the charter, private, or public school environment.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the regional leader for diverse learners, providing strategic guidance, coaching, and support to school-based leaders.
  • Builds the capacity of diverse learner leaders across schools through coaching, mentoring, and targeted professional development.
  • Establishes and reinforces a cohesive, equity-centered vision for inclusive practices across all schools.
  • Partners closely with the Chief Academic Officer, Managing Directors of Schools, and school leadership teams to align priorities and drive outcomes for diverse learners.
  • Leads communities of practice (CoPs) for diverse learner leaders.
  • Develops and drives a region-wide vision for inclusive, high-quality instruction for students with disabilities, multilingual learners (ENL/ELL), and students requiring social-emotional supports.
  • Designs and facilitates professional development for staff on differentiation, inclusion, co-teaching, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Coaches school leaders and instructional teams to ensure diverse learners have access to rigorous, grade-level content with appropriate supports and scaffolds.
  • Supports the development of inclusive classroom environments.
  • Guides schools in strengthening supports for students with specific learning needs.
  • Partners with Teaching & Learning and KIPP Foundation to ensure curriculum and assessments are accessible and aligned to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Supports schools in adapting curriculum, scope and sequences, pacing, and instructional practices.
  • Leads the development and implementation of region-wide systems for intervention and acceleration.
  • Ensures alignment between general education, special education, and ENL/ELL programming.
  • Coaches schools on implementing instructional minutes and program requirements with fidelity.
  • Provides regional oversight, guidance, and direct support to ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and NYSED regulations.
  • Supports schools in maintaining strong systems for IEP and 504 implementation, documentation, and service delivery.
  • Identifies trends and gaps in compliance and works with school teams to proactively address them.
  • Partners with school leaders to ensure compliance is both legally sound and instructionally meaningful.
  • Leads regional systems for monitoring the progress of diverse learners.
  • Analyzes data trends to identify gaps in achievement, growth, inclusion, and service delivery.
  • Partners with the Academic Data and Assessment Specialist to develop dashboards and reports.
  • Coaches school leaders and diverse learner teams to use data to drive instructional adjustments and interventions.
  • Supports reporting for compliance, accountability, and organizational priorities.
  • Serves as a key member of the academic leadership team, contributing to the design and execution of KIPP Capital Region’s instructional vision.
  • Develops and advances a long-term strategy for inclusive, equitable, and high-performing diverse learner programming.
  • Recommends and monitors progress toward regional goals for diverse learners.
  • Ensures alignment across schools to create a cohesive, high-quality experience for diverse learners.
  • Supports schools in building strong, trusting relationships with families of diverse learners.
  • Provides guidance on communication, partnership, and advocacy to ensure families are informed, engaged, and supported.
  • Performs other duties as outlined by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Complies with all charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values.
