About The Position

Freire Schools is a network of four charter schools in Philadelphia and Delaware dedicated to preparing students from historically underserved communities for college and beyond. The network is recognized for its belief in student potential, strong code of conduct, commitment to peace, sense of community, and engaging classrooms that prioritize academic achievement. Freire Schools has been ranked among the top charter networks nationwide for academic gains. This Dean of Students position is for one of the two high schools in Philadelphia, Freire Charter High School or TECH Freire Charter High School. The role involves fostering a positive and inclusive school environment by implementing strategies to support student behavior, promote social-emotional learning, and cultivate a sense of belonging and respect. The Dean will work as part of the culture team to support the academic and social-emotional success of each student, maintain safety and order, build relationships with students, facilitate restorative conversations, de-escalate crisis situations, communicate with staff and parents, and maintain student databases. The Dean at Freire Charter High School will also direct the athletics program.

Requirements

At least 3 years of previous successful experience working with diverse student populations, teaching experience preferred.
Positive attitude, sense of humor, and willingness to do whatever it takes to get a job done.
Ability to work well individually and as part of a team.
Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, and the ability to engage students, parents, colleagues, and community members in supporting youth development.
Belief in the potential of all students and maintenance of strong, schoolwide culture systems.
Modeling and cultivating values of equity, love, critical thinking, and diversity through consistent practices and strong relationships.

Responsibilities

Work with school leadership and culture team to foster a positive school culture that supports the academic and social-emotional success of each student.
Maintain safety and order and build relationships with students by being accessible and visible in hallways, classrooms, arrival/dismissal, lunch periods, and after school programs.
Facilitate restorative conversations between members of the school community and de-escalate students crisis situations.
Openly and regularly communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding student behavior.
Maintain student databases with climate/discipline information.
Function as director of our athletics program (at Freire Charter High School).
