About The Position

The Director of Development is responsible for creating a climate conducive for giving by developing and securing gifts (outright and pledged) of $25,000+ for assigned schools and colleges, special programs and projects, new initiatives, and campaigns. This includes identifying prospects to determine their potential as donors through strategic cultivation and well-tried solicitations in the tri-state area and other related regions as assigned. Closing and stewarding gifts for assigned prospects is also critical to the role. The Director of Development may also serve as University Advancement/Development staff liaison to assigned volunteer groups, providing to them with high-quality fundraising counsel, guidance, and assistance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least 3-5 years of experience in advancement or a related field, preferably in higher education.
  • Must be passionate about building relationships with donors, alumni, parents, and friends.
  • The successful applicant will have a track record that demonstrates solid fundraising results and demonstrated success in soliciting and closing major gifts, working closely with a dean or senior leader of an organization, as well as experience working with groups comprising prominent corporate and community volunteers and alumni.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable auto for travel related to position accountabilities.
  • The position requires travel and presence as needed for donor meetings and other events, which may occur outside of standard business hours.
  • Examples include, but are not limited to, presence at basketball games and other University events as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Qualify, cultivate, solicit and close major gifts for assigned schools and prospects in the tri-state area. 60 % of time
  • Qualify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward major gifts for prospects residing in other regions. 20 % of time
  • Providing fundraising counsel and assistance to University councils and groups, as assigned. 10 % of time
  • Participate in Major Gift Team, Department, Division, Advancement Team(s), college(s) and University meetings, events and activities, as required/appropriate. 10 % of time
