About The Position

The Director of Development and Marketing oversees the fundraising, communications, marketing, public relations, and community involvement functions of Catholic Charities, in support of the mission, ministries, programs, and annual operating budget. This role focuses on generating major gifts and corporate sponsorships, while leading the Development and Marketing team. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development and Marketing works independently as well as in collaboration with the Executive Director, Cabinet members, Program Managers, and Board of Directors to achieve success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in field of development required
  • Demonstrated ability to execute successful full-cycle donor strategy.
  • Knowledge of effective fundraising strategies and techniques for small to medium-sized non-profits.
  • Thorough and specific knowledge of the principles and techniques of major gift fundraising, corporate and foundation philanthropic giving, planned and life income gift opportunities, and gift and estate tax regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing, advertising, public relations, and communications principles required.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence with proven ability to drive results.
  • Highly effective communication skills with ability to articulate the Catholic faith tradition in written, verbal, and interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively and work well under pressure.
  • Project management skills.
  • Capable of working independently, while also engaging in collaboration between teams.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
  • Ability to learn program specific software applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and national donors, foundations, etc., existing relationships with these donor entities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and collaborate with the Development and Marketing team including the roles of Marketing Manager and Community Relations Manager.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to craft a comprehensive development strategy to enable sustainable growth and achievement of Catholic Charities strategic goals.
  • Develop policies and procedures for fund development, which reflect ethical fundraising practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
  • Identify and develop corporate, community, and individual prospects for the organization's development priorities.
  • Conduct face-to-face meetings with donors to learn more about their interests and goals and to share about the work of Catholic Charities.
  • Continue to develop pipeline of potential supporters, building on referrals from board members, current advocates and research.
  • Work closely with members of the Board of Directors to strategize and solicit individuals, corporations and foundations for major gifts in support of Catholic Charities.
  • Under the direction of the Executive Director, cultivate and manage a portfolio of large gift donors and special gifts.
  • Coach leadership staff and board members on how to effectively fundraise, helping them to identify and cultivate potential donors, as well as steward existing donors toward increased levels of giving.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Program Managers to establish funding priorities for pursuing grants.
  • Research grant opportunities to generate funds for the organization.
  • Create grant application content for consistency across the organization.
  • Assist with applications, reports, site visits, and other communications to foundations and corporations for support of specific programs of Catholic Charities organization wide.
  • Identify potential contributors, establish relationships with potential donors, provide information to interested individuals about planned giving opportunities, handle all planned gifts made to Catholic Charities, and maintain all development records related to wills, trusts, charitable gift annuities and other planned gifts.
  • Collaborate with Community Relations Manager and Marketing Manager to monitor trends in the community and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary to ensure fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Team with the Executive Director, Marketing Manager, and Community Relations Manager for annual budget and management of fund development activities.
  • Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Manage the operations of the Development and Marketing office, including Marketing Manager and Community Relations Manager.
  • Plan and direct work.
  • Oversee team and individual development, engagement, and employee relations.
  • Participate in organizational planning.
  • Offer insight and guidance to the short and long term planning for the organization.
  • Ability to work regular and occasional irregular hours to include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel frequently to visit prospects and donors within our service area of SW Iowa. Overnight or weekend travel may be required on a limited basis.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully pass Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Must provide own transportation, meeting auto insurance coverage requirements, with mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background screening, including Child and Dependent Adult Abuse registry check is required.
  • Compliance with Safe Environment training and monthly bulletins.
  • Must maintain absolute confidentiality of information, written or verbal, according to policy and legal requirements.
  • Attend staff meetings, community meetings, approved seminars, agency trainings/retreats, and professional conferences.
  • Possess a strong commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities including the understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and ability to demonstrate the philosophy and values of the agency.
  • Employees are expected to support the Catholic Social Teaching principles in public forum.
  • Fulfillment of the employee’s job responsibilities should be consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
