The Director of Corporate Sustainability & ESG is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining sustainability, social, and governance programs that support the company's mission, vision, values, goals, and targets. This role is an independent contributor within the company who will be expected to lead ESG efforts through collaboration among H2OA Local subsidiaries and as the chairperson of the ESG Subcommittee of the H2O America Operating Committee. The director will be responsible for leading initiatives and reporting toward the company’s greenhouse gas emissions reductions goals, will design and develop corporate sustainability and ESG strategies to ensure that business practices, programs, and services are socially and environmentally friendly and compliant with government rules and regulations, and will be responsible for any required regulatory or ratings agency reports on the company’s ESG efforts. They will collaborate with other leaders to implement processes and technologies that reduce the organization's carbon footprint and promote the organization's sustainability philosophy to internal and external audiences.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in corporate sustainability or other applicable field
  • Ability to create, interpret, and execute a budget.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Excellent presentation skills for delivering proposals to all levels within the company.
  • Understanding and proficiency in reporting frameworks such as GRI, SASB, CDP or TCFD
  • Ability to lead/project manage through a cross-functional, matrixed organization
  • Capability to track, analyze and interpret key subject area data for reporting purposes and to steer company-wide initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Operations Committee ESG Subcommittee in the development and execution of current and future ESG related strategies, goals, target metrics, and activities.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive corporate sustainability and ESG strategy that aligns with the company's values and objectives.
  • Identify and prioritize key ESG matters that are relevant to the business and stakeholders, and develop strategies to address them.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to build awareness and support for the company's sustainability and ESG initiatives.
  • Develop and implement sustainability programs that reduce the environmental impact and improve resource efficiency.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of ESG reporting frameworks, including the disclosure and communication of ESG performance to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate corporate sustainability and ESG considerations into business decisions and processes.
  • Manage relationships with key external stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, industry associations, and regulatory bodies.
  • Develop and manage the corporate sustainability and ESG budget and ensure that resources are allocated effectively.
  • Support corporate management systems by providing expertise and training to subsidiaries and affected departments.
  • Maintain ownership and provide quality control of the development of Data Management Plans for sustainability metrics related to sustainability performance and reporting to ESG rating agencies.
  • Define and monitor business processes to generate upstream data that will define the company’s functions and enable the identification of opportunities to refine business processes.
  • Oversee annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory audit.
  • Partner with investor relations team to communicate key ESG messages to investors.
  • Continuously work to expand company disclosures and improve the company’s posture with ratings agencies and frameworks.
