About The Position

Sequencing is hiring a Director of Consumer Engineering to lead the team responsible for every customer-facing experience across the platform, including onboarding, checkout, subscriptions, logged-in experiences, growth surfaces, AI-powered user experiences, and core consumer product flows. You report to the Head of Engineering and work directly with engineers, product leaders, designers, and growth teams to ship high-quality consumer experiences at startup speed. You play a critical role in scaling the Consumer Engineering organization and advancing the company’s AI-native product strategy so more people can turn their DNA and genome into clear, personalized health insights. This is a highly hands-on engineering leadership role for someone who leads from the front, thrives in fast-moving environments, and is willing to get into the details to solve difficult product and engineering problems.

Requirements

  • 10 plus years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership and 2 plus years managing managers and or multiple engineering teams.
  • Significant experience building and scaling consumer technology, ecommerce, subscription, software as a service, financial technology, health technology, or AI-native products at rapidly growing startups or growth-stage companies.
  • Strong hands-on technical background with modern web application architectures and consumer-scale systems.
  • Technically fluent in React, TypeScript, Node.js, APIs, cloud-native systems, and modern engineering workflows.
  • Meaningful experience building, integrating, managing, or scaling AI-powered products, AI-assisted workflows, large language model systems, personalization systems, recommendation systems, or AI-native user experiences.
  • Strong understanding of modern AI engineering tooling and workflows, including AI-assisted development environments and engineering productivity systems.
  • Comfortable operating in highly ambiguous, rapidly evolving startup environments where leaders are expected to proactively solve problems rather than manage from a distance.
  • Proven ability to improve engineering delivery predictability, execution quality, sprint accuracy, operational discipline, and organizational accountability.
  • Experience directly coaching and developing Engineering Managers and senior engineers, including teams operating across both modern and legacy systems while guiding safe, staged migrations and infrastructure evolution.
  • Strong product and customer instinct with the ability to balance engineering quality, product velocity, experimentation, and business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end engineering delivery, quality, and reliability for all customer-facing products and experiences across the Sequencing.com platform.
  • Lead the evolution of AI-powered consumer experiences, including personalization, intelligent workflows, conversational interfaces, AI-assisted onboarding, genomic insights delivery, and future AI-native product capabilities.
  • Establish and enforce a high engineering quality bar across mission-critical customer flows including checkout, subscriptions, authentication, account management, and logged-in user experiences.
  • Build a highly predictable delivery organization by improving planning, estimation, execution, prioritization, and operational accountability across the Consumer Engineering team.
  • Work directly alongside engineers, Product, Design, Growth, QA, and Bioinformatics teams to rapidly solve product, technical, and operational challenges.
  • Lead and develop Engineering Managers and engineers while maintaining strong hands-on involvement in architecture discussions, technical direction, product decisions, delivery execution, and incident resolution.
  • Drive the company’s AI engineering adoption strategy, including effective use of AI-assisted development tools, AI-native workflows, engineering productivity systems, and modern software development practices.
  • Partner closely with Product and Growth teams to improve experimentation velocity, conversion optimization, retention systems, onboarding experiences, and lifecycle engagement.
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering on infrastructure modernization, system scalability, API architecture, and migration planning while ensuring customer-facing systems remain highly stable and performant.
  • Build organizational systems that provide leadership with clear visibility into engineering progress, delivery risks, roadmap execution, staffing needs, and operational health.
  • Grow and scale the Consumer Engineering organization through hiring, mentorship, organizational design, performance management, and engineering culture development.
  • Improve engineering velocity while reducing production risk, technical debt, and rework across customer-facing systems.
  • Help shape the long-term consumer product and AI platform strategy for the company.
