About The Position

Supple Homes Inc. is seeking an experienced Director of Construction to lead our construction operations and oversee the Project Managers responsible for delivering architect-driven luxury residences throughout Silicon Valley. This is a senior leadership position for an accomplished residential construction professional who understands how to lead both projects and people. The Director of Construction will provide oversight across our active project portfolio, coach and hold Project Managers accountable, strengthen operational systems, and ensure our homes are delivered to Supple Homes' standards for quality, schedule, financial performance, communication, and client experience. Based in Menlo Park, Supple Homes is a boutique custom homebuilder with more than 20 years of experience delivering sophisticated residences throughout Silicon Valley. Our projects typically range from $4 million to $11 million, working alongside leading architects, consultants, subcontractors, and discerning homeowners. Requirements

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in residential construction, with significant experience in luxury or high-end custom homes
  • Multiple years of experience directly managing Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, or construction teams
  • Proven success overseeing multiple complex construction projects simultaneously
  • Strong knowledge of the Bay Area luxury residential construction market
  • Thorough understanding of California building codes, permitting, inspections, and construction practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in project scheduling, budgeting, forecasting, subcontractor management, change management, and cost control
  • Experience delivering sophisticated architect-led homes with demanding quality standards
  • Strong financial understanding and the ability to assess project profitability and operational performance
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to coach, challenge, and develop experienced construction professionals
  • Strong judgment and the ability to resolve complex construction and personnel issues
  • Excellent communication skills with clients, architects, subcontractors, employees, and company leadership
  • Experience with BuilderTrend or comparable construction-management software
  • Highly organized, accountable, proactive, and comfortable operating with significant responsibility
  • Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Must be based in the Bay Area and available to visit Menlo Park-area projects regularly

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or a related discipline is beneficial but significant relevant experience is more important.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage, mentor, and develop Supple Homes' Project Managers
  • Provide leadership and accountability across multiple active custom-home projects
  • Regularly review project performance with PMs and identify issues before they become significant problems
  • Establish clear expectations for project leadership, communication, documentation, and follow-through
  • Help Project Managers resolve difficult construction, subcontractor, client, scheduling, and financial challenges
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and development of construction personnel
  • Build a high-performing construction team capable of taking ownership and operating consistently
  • Maintain executive-level oversight of project schedules, budgets, scopes, quality, and client commitments
  • Review project financial performance, forecasting, cost-to-complete, change orders, and profitability
  • Ensure projects remain properly staffed, planned, documented, and resourced
  • Identify schedule risks, cost exposure, procurement issues, and operational bottlenecks across the project portfolio
  • Participate in critical project meetings and client conversations when senior leadership involvement is required
  • Ensure Project Managers maintain accurate and timely information in BuilderTrend and other company systems
  • Drive projects toward successful completion while protecting quality, margin, and client relationships
  • Develop and continuously improve company construction processes, standards, templates, and operating procedures
  • Create greater consistency in how projects move from preconstruction through construction and closeout
  • Improve scheduling, procurement, cost control, documentation, reporting, and subcontractor-management systems
  • Establish measurable construction KPIs and use them to evaluate team and project performance
  • Improve coordination between construction, estimating, accounting, administration, and company leadership
  • Help determine project assignments, workloads, staffing requirements, and resource priorities
  • Identify recurring operational problems and implement practical long-term solutions
  • Maintain Supple Homes' standards for craftsmanship and execution across all active projects
  • Ensure teams are proactive rather than reactive when dealing with quality, schedule, and budget concerns
  • Reinforce jobsite safety expectations and compliance with company procedures
  • Maintain high standards for documentation, communication, forecasting, and administrative accuracy
  • Develop strong relationships with key subcontractors, architects, consultants, vendors, and trade partners
  • Hold Project Managers accountable for both project results and the client experience
  • Work closely with ownership and senior leadership on company priorities, staffing, forecasting, and growth
  • Provide clear visibility into the health of every active construction project
  • Participate in annual and quarterly planning for the construction department
  • Help establish project capacity and determine when the company is prepared to take on additional work
  • Recommend investments in people, technology, systems, and processes that improve construction performance
  • Help build the operational infrastructure required for Supple Homes' continued growth
