About The Position

The Director of Community Development is responsible for overseeing the engineering, planning, development and building activity in the city and its ETJ. The position provides and supervises professional and technical services to the City Council, city management, Planning Commission, developers, builders and general public regarding planning, platting, building and general development matters. The position is established by ordinance and certain specific duties are described for the Director in the code of ordinances.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in urban affairs, urban planning, public administration, civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent level of related experience.
  • Five years of experience in a professional planning, city administration, or related field or three years of administrative and supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a valid and current Texas Class "C" driver's license or higher.
  • Knowledge of various state statutes and local ordinances, codes and regulations pertaining to planning, zoning and building codes.
  • Skill in conflict resolution and negotiation.
  • Skill in reading maps, interpreting ordinances and understanding highly technical or specialized materials.
  • Skill in preparation and presentation of technical material.
  • Skill in achieving resolutions between developers, engineers, and citizens.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with developers, builders, outside agencies, various boards and commissions, and other City departments.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment.
  • Must pass FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprint-based criminal background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree or registration as a professional engineer in the State of Texas is preferred.
  • Knowledge of MapInfo, AutoCAD, GIS applications or similar software is beneficial.
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required.
