About The Position

We are seeking a Director of Cloud Architecture & Platform Engineering who can combine strategic leadership with hands-on technical execution. The role leads a lean, high-output team and is expected to spend roughly 50% of the time working directly on technical systems and code, with the rest focused on team leadership, strategy, and platform security for healthcare. The director serves as the primary cloud architect, designing systems that handle high-volume clinical data and protected health information. The role includes developing core infrastructure, prototyping platform features, responding to complex architectural issues and critical production incidents, and maintaining clean cloud and platform environments free of vulnerabilities, legacy code, and legacy architecture practices. The director manages and mentors cloud and platform engineers, defines a Platform-as-a-Product vision, partners with Security and Compliance to automate HIPAA and HITRUST requirements, and oversees cloud budgeting and cost optimization. The position includes limited travel scheduled according to business needs.

Requirements

  • 5–8+ years of experience in Cloud or Infrastructure Engineering.
  • At least 3–5 years in a leadership role such as Lead, Manager, or Director within a scale-up environment.
  • Hands-on experience managing infrastructure in HIPAA, HITRUST, or SOC 2 environments.
  • Experience scaling a platform from an early-stage environment to an enterprise-grade, robust platform.
  • Ability to partner directly with application engineering and data engineering teams and serve as an expert on cloud capabilities.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Kubernetes, including EKS or AKS.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Infrastructure as Code for automation.
  • Mastery of automation tools for developing seamless CI/CD deployment workflows.
  • Advanced knowledge of secure network topology architecture.
  • Deep understanding of IAM and Service Control Policies (SCPs) to enforce least privilege across a multi-account organization.
  • Skill using cloud financial management tools to balance performance and budget management.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary architect for the cloud environment and personally design systems that handle high-volume clinical data and PHI.
  • Build CI/CD templates, refine the Kubernetes service mesh, and migrate the legacy cloud platform toward a Platform-as-a-Service model.
  • Rapidly prototype platform features, such as automated compliance monitoring and developer self-service portals, before handing them off to the team for scaling.
  • Act as a hands-on Tier 3 escalation point for complex architectural issues and critical production incidents.
  • Maintain cloud and platform environments in a clean state, free of vulnerabilities, legacy code, and legacy architecture practices.
  • Manage and mentor a specialized team of cloud and platform engineers.
  • Conduct code reviews that improve quality and help develop team members’ skills.
  • Define the Platform-as-a-Product vision and align technical initiatives with faster time-to-value for healthcare partners.
  • Partner with Security and Compliance teams to automate HIPAA and HITRUST requirements and implement automated guardrails.
  • Oversee the cloud budget and implement automated cost-saving measures without sacrificing performance or reliability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
