About The Position

The Director of Campus Recreation is responsible for the overall organization and administration of a comprehensive campus recreation department. This includes 10 full-time staff, 3 GA’s, and 130 student employees. Campus recreation facilities include the Morris Recreation Center (MRC), Cain Sports Field Complex, Outdoor Adventure Complex, and an Esports Room. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10) years of related, progressive experience in campus recreation, including a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment

  • Master’s degree in a related field such as Recreation, Kinesiology, or Sports Management.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and oversight for all areas within the department including aquatics, business administration, data analysis, facility operations, fitness, marketing, nutrition, outdoor adventure, and sports programs.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, and provides supervision for 10 professional staff members.
  • Plans and manages facilities for long-term and short-term needs including planned maintenance, deferred maintenance, and custodial services for the Morris Recreation Center (MRC), Cain Sports Field Complex, Outdoor Adventure Complex, and an Esports Room.
  • Responsible for the strategic planning for the department including long and short-term goals and the development of new initiatives to meet the needs of the student population.
  • Develops, implements, and manages the departmental budget, including revenue of over $2.5 million
  • Develops a comprehensive risk management program for the department.
  • Directly supervises the data analysis of the department, including supervising a GA in the creation of dashboards and reports
  • Provides leadership for the continuous development and improvement of departmental values such as customer service, student development, and teamwork through regular trainings and retreats.
  • Contributes to development of services and strategies for the retention and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Develops and implements effective marketing strategies for the department to engage students and promote non-student memberships
  • Collaborates with departments inside and outside the division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs such as Health & Human Performance, Athletics, Financial Affairs, Emergency Management, University Police Department, Office of Student Engagement, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and Compliance.
  • Develops collaborative efforts with both educational and civic groups to design, develop and deliver appropriate programs for the individuals desiring a comprehensive campus recreation program.
  • Liaison for the department to other campus departments and the Commerce community.
  • Interprets, updates and institutes policies and procedures to assure that the department complies with national, state and University regulations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing an environment where people feel welcomed, valued, supported, and respected as they work to pursue their academic and professional goals.
  • Support and align with department mission, vision, values, and strategic plan
  • Attend, support, and assist with department events and programming
  • Serve on department and division committees
  • Engage in activities that further professional development skills and keep current with developments in the recreational sports and fitness professions to effectively implement job responsibilities.
  • Work varied hours including evenings and weekends necessary to accomplish job responsibilities; will be busier during certain parts of the academic year.
  • May temporarily perform other duties assigned to maintain operations and services
