About The Position

The Director of Asset Protection – Field Stores is responsible for operationalizing the enterprise Asset Protection strategy across the retail store fleet for J.Crew and Madewell. Reporting to the Vice President of Asset Protection & Fraud , this role translates enterprise risk mitigation priorities into scalable field programs, operational workflows, training, and investigative practices that reduce shrink, strengthen store safety, and protect company assets. The Director leads the field Asset Protection organization , ensuring consistent execution across stores while developing the process infrastructure, program frameworks, and accountability structures necessary to support a modern asset protection function. A core responsibility of this role is building clear workflows, standardized processes, RACI frameworks, and training programs that enable store teams and field leaders to execute asset protection practices consistently and effectively. The Director partners closely with Store Operations, HR, Legal, IT, Supply Chain, and Finance to ensure asset protection practices are integrated into daily store operations.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of asset protection, loss prevention, or retail risk management experience
  • 5+ years leading multi-unit field asset protection teams
  • Experience designing operational programs, training initiatives, and investigative processes in a retail environment
  • Experience working cross-functionally with store operations leadership
  • Strong understanding of retail shrink drivers and loss prevention practices

Responsibilities

  • Field Program Development & Operationalization Translate enterprise Asset Protection strategy into clear operational programs and initiatives for the retail store fleet.
  • Design and implement scalable field programs that reduce shrink, mitigate operational risk, and support store safety.
  • Develop operational playbooks and program frameworks that ensure consistent execution across stores and regions.
  • Partner with field leadership to ensure asset protection initiatives align with operational priorities and store workflows.
  • Continuously evaluate program effectiveness and adjust approaches based on field feedback and data insights.
  • Process Design, Workflows & Governance Develop and maintain clear operational workflows and standardized processes for asset protection activities across stores.
  • Create and implement RACI frameworks that clarify ownership and accountability between Asset Protection, Store Operations, HR, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Establish consistent incident handling, investigative, and escalation protocols across the store fleet.
  • Build operational structures that ensure repeatable, scalable execution of asset protection practices.
  • Support the VP in implementing governance frameworks that strengthen risk management and operational accountability.
  • Training & Capability Development Design and lead a comprehensive Asset Protection training strategy for store leaders and associates.
  • Develop structured training programs covering: Theft prevention and shrink awareness Fraud detection and transaction integrity Organized Retail Crime awareness and response Operational controls and inventory protection Safety and incident response protocols
  • Ensure asset protection training is integrated into store onboarding, leadership development, and ongoing field education.
  • Partner with Store Operations and HR to embed training into existing leadership development programs.
  • Continuously evaluate training effectiveness and update programs to address emerging risks and operational needs.
  • Field Leadership & Team Development Lead and develop the Regional Asset Protection Manager (RAPM) organization.
  • Establish clear expectations for field asset protection teams around investigations, store support, operational risk mitigation, and partnership with field leadership.
  • Foster a service-oriented approach where the asset protection team supports store operations while maintaining strong accountability standards.
  • Provide coaching and development that strengthens investigative capability and operational partnership.
  • Shrink Reduction & Risk Mitigation Analyze store-level shrink trends and operational data to identify root causes of loss.
  • Develop targeted field strategies to mitigate high-risk behaviors, operational gaps, and repeat loss patterns.
  • Partner with field leadership to implement corrective actions and preventative controls.
  • Ensure field asset protection teams provide data-driven insights and practical solutions that improve operational performance.
  • Investigations & ORC Support Oversee field investigations related to internal theft, fraud, and organized retail crime.
  • Ensure investigations follow consistent documentation standards and legal protocols.
  • Partner with enterprise investigations and law enforcement when cases require escalation.
  • Support field teams in building strong ORC cases and intelligence sharing with industry partners.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership Serve as a key partner to Store Operations leadership , ensuring asset protection practices are integrated into store workflows.
  • Collaborate with HR, Legal, IT, Finance, and Supply Chain to address operational risk, investigative issues, and policy enforcement.
  • Provide leadership with insights into shrink drivers, fraud patterns, and operational risk trends.
