About The Position

The University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History (MNCH) is seeking a Director of Archaeological Research to lead its established Archaeological Research Division. This division is a key player in archaeological research in the American West, conducting numerous projects across Oregon annually. The museum itself serves as the State of Oregon's official repository for public collections and houses extensive ethnographic and archaeological objects, fossils, and biological specimens. MNCH is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a significant center for interdisciplinary research, education, and public service, serving a wide range of stakeholders including Native American Tribes, researchers, students, and the general public. The museum employs approximately 40 faculty, researchers, and staff across various facilities on the University of Oregon campus, with annual expenditures of around $3 million from diverse funding sources. The museum welcomes over 30,000 visitors annually and reaches another 20,000 Oregonians through its statewide educational programs.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field (for Research Assistant Type C rank).
  • Four years of experience in fieldwork, analysis, and/or research labs (for Research Assistant Type C rank).
  • Terminal degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field (for Research Associate rank).
  • Four years of experience in fieldwork, analysis, and/or research labs (for Research Associate rank).
  • Terminal degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field (for Senior Research Associate I rank).
  • Six years of relevant experience post terminal degree, four years of which must include fieldwork, analysis, and/or research lab experience (for Senior Research Associate I rank).
  • Terminal degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field (for Senior Research Associate II rank).
  • Twelve years of relevant experience post terminal degree, four years of which must include fieldwork, analysis, and/or research lab experience (for Senior Research Associate II rank).
  • In-depth knowledge of archaeology and cultural resource management (CRM) legislation and process in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and Great Basin.
  • Ability to conduct archaeological projects in Oregon (Permitted by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)).
  • Ability to prioritize and communicate across multiple projects.
  • Ability to lead a diverse team with varied areas of expertise.
  • Knowledge of CRM policies of state and federal agencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS information management in ArcGIS.
  • Excellent writing skills for proposal development and publication.
  • Ability to coordinate with the Oregon SHPO, state and federal agencies, and Native American Tribes in Oregon.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a transdisciplinary team of archaeologists and historic preservationists in conducting survey, excavation, data analysis, and reporting for state and federal agencies, public entities, and private firms.
  • Oversee strategic planning and all aspects of project management, including sponsor development, proposal development, research design, data analysis, reporting, and publication.
  • Manage a sponsored project portfolio of sixty to eighty concurrent contracts, requiring prioritization, sponsor communication, and budgetary and capacity oversight.
  • Actively participate in research dissemination and publication through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, professional conferences, university lectures, and public presentations.
  • Collaborate with international, national, and regional research groups and universities, multidisciplinary UO departments, and other museum units.
  • Assign and review the work of all project leaders in the research division, including deputy directors, the operations manager, research associates, and research assistants.
