About The Position

The African American Heritage Commission is seeking an enthusiastic Director. The Director of the African American Heritage Commission provides strategic leadership and program oversight for the African American Heritage Commission (AAHC). The mission of the Commission is to preserve, protect, and promote North Carolina’s African American history, arts, and culture for all people. The Commission was created to assist the Secretary of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) in the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of African American history, arts, and culture. The Commission works across all divisions within DNCR to support African American heritage initiatives, and the Director determines the strategic direction of that work and partnerships with external state and federal agencies, community stakeholders, and educational institutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and Five (5) years of progressive experience related to the area of assignment; or An equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience executing and/or supporting multi-year strategic plans and tracking performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience working within state government or comparable public sector institutions.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating cross-division and/or multi-agency collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience with education initiatives, public history, cultural preservation, and/or community-based programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in evening and weekend meetings and events as necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the Commission at public events and community gatherings.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with various audiences in both office and field settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and priorities in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Working with commissioners appointed by the Governor and the State Legislature to the NC African American Heritage Commission to determine program priorities within the direction of the guiding legislation for the Commission.
  • Supervising all staff, contractors, volunteers, research assistants, and interns associated with the African American Heritage Commission.
  • Identifying necessary funding, human resources, and operational needs to meet, in a sustainable way, the mission of preserving, promoting, and protecting North Carolina’s African American history, arts, and culture for all people.
  • Working with staff, commissioners, and community partners, to plan and implement heritage and cultural tourism projects and initiatives that have regional and statewide impact.
  • Supporting public, private, and grassroots partnerships around efforts ranging from lesson plan development to developing messaging around cultural heritage assets.
