About The Position

The Director of Advanced Academics and Virtual Instruction provides districtwide leadership, coordination, and oversight for advanced academic programming and virtual/hybrid learning opportunities. This position supports the development, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of programs that expand rigorous learning options for students, including K-12 Gifted and Talented services, Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and College Readiness Programs, International Baccalaureate, academic competitions, college and career readiness initiatives, and virtual instruction. The Director works collaboratively with campus and district leaders to ensure high-quality instruction, equitable student access, compliance with state and federal requirements, and alignment to the district’s strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Masters’ degree in an education-related field
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certification
  • 3 years’ experience as a successful teacher
  • 3 years’ experience in an instructional leadership role
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction, including advanced academics
  • Knowledge of the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students and all compliance issues
  • Ability to learn and gather information related to Virtual Instruction Academies and use this knowledge to create an academy from the ground up.
  • Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to train or arrange professional development for teachers, administrators and parents
  • Ability to coordinate district functions
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to interpret and compose policy, procedures and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • Mid-Management, principal, or superintendent certification
  • Gifted and Talented certification preferred
  • Experience with virtual, hybrid, or online instructional programming
  • Experience with Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, IB, or college readiness programs

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for district advanced academic programs, including Gifted and Talented, Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, International Baccalaureate, academic competitions, and other enrichment opportunities.
  • Ensure advanced academic programs are aligned with district goals, state requirements, college readiness standards, and student needs.
  • Collaborate with campus leaders, counselors, and teachers to increase student access, participation, and success in rigorous coursework.
  • Monitor student enrollment, performance, completion rates, exam participation, and achievement data in advanced academic programs.
  • Support campuses in identifying and serving gifted and talented students in accordance with state guidelines and district procedures.
  • Coordinate professional development related to differentiation, rigor, advanced coursework, gifted education, and college readiness.
  • Work with curriculum staff to ensure advanced academic courses are appropriately sequenced and aligned across grade levels.
  • Serve as the district liaison for college, university, and community partnerships related to advanced academics and dual credit opportunities.
  • Lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of district virtual and hybrid instructional programs.
  • Coordinate online course offerings designed to expand learning opportunities for WFISD students and attract students seeking flexible instructional options.
  • Ensure virtual instruction meets district expectations for quality, accountability, student engagement, attendance, and academic progress.
  • Collaborate with campus and district staff to identify appropriate courses, staffing models, student eligibility criteria, and support systems for virtual instruction.
  • Monitor virtual student performance, attendance, course completion, and intervention needs.
  • Support the selection, implementation, and effective use of learning management systems and digital instructional resources.
  • Develop procedures and expectations for virtual teachers, students, and families.
  • Stay informed on state requirements, funding implications, accountability standards, and best practices related to virtual and hybrid education.
  • Use data to evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Provide coaching and support to campus administrators, counselors, and teachers regarding advanced academics and virtual instruction.
  • Develop and maintain district handbooks, guidelines, procedures, and communication materials related to assigned programs.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and updates for district leadership, the Board of Trustees, campuses, families, and community stakeholders as needed.
  • Assist with district planning related to course offerings, staffing, scheduling, student access, and program expansion.
  • Promote equitable access to advanced learning opportunities for all students, including historically underrepresented student groups.
  • Support the district’s efforts to increase college, career, and military readiness outcomes.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, staff, and community partners regarding advanced academic and virtual learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate informational meetings, parent nights, student recruitment efforts, and program awareness campaigns.
  • Serve as a district contact for families interested in advanced coursework, gifted services, online learning, or flexible instructional options.
  • Build partnerships with higher education, business, military, and community organizations to expand student opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local policies related to assigned programs.
  • Assist with the development and management of budgets, grants, contracts, and instructional resources related to advanced academics and virtual instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation required for program monitoring, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Support district compliance with state requirements for Gifted and Talented services, virtual instruction, dual credit, and other assigned areas.
  • Regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May supervise assigned staff, program coordinators, virtual instructors, tutors, or support personnel as assigned.
