About The Position

The Accounting Director is responsible for leading and directing financial operations of an independent Critical Access Hospital (CAH), ensuring accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and sound fiscal management in a rural healthcare environment. This role leads financial operations and contributes to strategic financial planning, and ensures adherence to healthcare-specific reimbursement and reporting requirements. The Accounting Director supervises accounting staff and leads processes including general ledger management, month-end and year-end close, financial statement preparation, budgeting, and audit coordination. The position plays a key role in maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, including Medicare cost reporting and CAH reimbursement methodologies. This individual partners closely with hospital leadership to provide financial insights that support operational decision-making, sustainability, and long-term financial health. Success in this role requires strong knowledge of healthcare finance, attention to detail, and the ability to balance regulatory demands with the unique constraints of a rural, independent hospital setting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a healthcare setting
  • Strong knowledge of Critical Access Hospital (CAH) reimbursement and Medicare Cost Report preparation or oversight
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and healthcare financial reporting requirements
  • Experience with financial systems
  • Familiarity with Epic EHR financial/revenue cycle data and its integration with accounting systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing month-end close, audits, and financial statement preparation
  • Proven leadership experience to develop staff in a small, independent organizational setting
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, financial modeling, data analysis)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial leaders and stakeholders
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and ability to work independently in a rural healthcare environment

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMA preferred
  • Experience working in an independent or rural hospital, preferably a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) preferred
  • Experience in Michigan healthcare regulatory environment and familiarity with state-specific reporting preferred
  • Experience with Multiview ERP system or similar healthcare financial systems preferred
  • Experience with cost accounting, service line analysis, and financial benchmarking in a healthcare setting preferred
  • Familiarity with grant accounting, rural health funding programs, or 340B program financials preferred
  • Experience supporting capital planning, debt management, or bond compliance preferred
  • Experience with Lean/Six Sigma or process improvement initiatives preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading and directing the financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, and cash management within the Multiview financial system
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements and reconciliations
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, presenting actionable insights to executive leadership
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and monitoring of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement and CAH cost reporting requirements
  • Prepare and/or review the Medicare Cost Report, ensuring alignment with CAH cost-based reimbursement methodologies
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external audits, cost report audits, and regulatory reviews
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls and financial policies to support the integrity of the organization
  • Lead and develop accounting staff, including training on Multiview processes and reporting workflows
  • Monitor cash flow, days cash on hand, and overall financial performance
  • Collaborate with operational and clinical leaders, leveraging Epic data (e.g., patient revenue, volumes, service lines) to support financial analysis
  • Ensure accurate integration and reconciliation between Epic (patient billing/revenue) and Multiview (financial reporting)
  • Identify and implement process improvements, including optimization across Epic and Multiview systems
  • Lead financial strategy in collaboration with CFO
