About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President of Accounting, the Director of Accounting for this $350M+ Association serves as both a strategic leader and a senior technical practitioner within a lean, high-impact operating model for the Association’s accounting function. This role is responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, including the precise recording of revenue and expenses for the Association, with a special emphasis on the complex government contracts, grants, and capital projects. The Director of Accounting oversees the organization’s financial risk framework across all funding levels, maintains robust internal controls, and co-leads the annual audit process. This position ensures audit readiness and interfaces with the outside audit firm for matters related to the Uniform Guidance audit and other supplemental audits. The Director of Accounting drives operational efficiency in the accounting department while serving as a key technical advisor to senior leadership on GAAP treatment and the financial implications of organizational initiatives. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required OR,
  • Bachelor's degree in a non-related field AND a master’s degree in accounting or a related field required
  • Minimum of 8+ years' of accounting experience required, including at least four (4) years of supervisory or management level experience required. To include experience working in an accounting environment that requires compliance with specific governmental regulations
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure required
  • Advanced proficiency in essential business software, including the Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and financial reporting tools (e.g., NetSuite)
  • Licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute

Responsibilities

  • Conducts technical research to ensure all organizational transactions are aligned with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), OMB guidance, and applicable governmental regulations
  • Ensures all direct and indirect costs from the corporate office (Association Services and Leadership) and Community Support Services (CSS) Admin are recorded by federal regulations, GAAP, and YMCA policy
  • Oversees the accurate and timely recording of grant receivables and revenue; performs monthly AR and Deferred Revenue reconciliations in coordination with operational leaders to ensure subsequent-month adjustments; records journal entries for government contracts, Special Purpose Entities (SPEs) and other complex transactions
  • Leads the analysis and reconciliation of GL accounts for reserves, AR, Deferred Revenue, bank accounts, investments, and Construction in Process (CIP), including the preparation of investment revenue audit schedules
  • Partners with the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Accounting on organizational strategy and decision-making; assists in Board and Finance Committee reporting and contributes to cross-functional initiatives
  • Partners with the Fiscal Compliance Manager to uphold federal and state contract requirements and manage high-level relationships with external auditors and regulatory bodies
  • Oversees the preparation of the annual Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate (NICRA) calculations for submission to the cognizant federal agency; prepares the consolidated audited financial statements for the YMCA and special purpose entities; manages external partnerships in the preparation of the annual IRS Form 990 and state’s insurance submissions
  • Optimizes and establishes standardized processes and workflows related to revenue recognition, deposits, lease accounting, and other accounting procedures, as necessary
  • Co-leads (with the VP Accounting and Controls) the end-to-end annual audit process, including coordinating fieldwork and management of external audit firm relationships
  • Owns the accounting system (NetSuite) strategy and upgrades; leads the implementations, upgrades, and the integration of AI and automation initiatives to drive departmental efficiency
  • Oversees capital expenditure (Capex) administration and the development of finance and accounting policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs), including the facilitation of related staff training
  • Assumes ownership of high-impact, non-routine projects to enhance operational efficiency as determined by executive leadership
