About The Position

The Director of Accounting oversees the accounting operations of the Administrative Offices of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of financial records. This role is responsible for financial reporting, audits, internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting standards. The Director of Accounting provides reliable financial information to support leadership, the Finance Council, and the ministry of the Roman Catholic Church in New Orleans.

Requirements

  • CPA license
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5 or more years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and not-for-profit accounting
  • Experience with audits, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or Master's degree in Accounting
  • Experience in a not-for-profit or faith-based organization
  • Working knowledge of risk management and self-insurance

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, billings, and deposit and loan programs
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly close, including review and approval of supporting schedules
  • Maintain accounting records in compliance with GAAP and not-for-profit standards
  • Maintain working knowledge of and assist with accounting for self-insured property & casualty and health insurance programs
  • Prepare and review financial statements for leadership and the Finance Council
  • Lead the annual financial audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
  • Support preparation of Form 990(T), bond compliance, and other external reports
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic and operational decision-making
  • Support the annual budgeting process and monitor budget performance
  • Provide variance analysis, forecasts, and cash management oversight
  • Develop and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and regulatory compliance
  • Oversee financial reporting for grants, contracts, and donor-restricted funds
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure financial alignment
  • Serve as a consultative resource to parishes, schools, and agencies on accounting and financial matters
