About The Position

Hatch is seeking a Director of Mobile Engineering to lead mobile engineering across its Adult, Kids, Foundations, and Growth product teams. The director will manage mobile engineering managers, set technical and architectural direction, and provide the accountability, resourcing, escalation paths, and coordination needed to deliver across a broad product portfolio. Engineering Managers retain responsibility for day-to-day delivery. The role includes establishing cross-platform strategy for iOS and Android, directing architecture governance and the architectural decision record (ADR) process, overseeing software quality with QA, guiding hiring and staff development, and shaping AI adoption and tooling efficiency. The director will work closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and other stakeholders to build a product-focused engineering culture and a robust operating model for planning and coordination. As capacity allows, the role may also include select mobile individual-contributor work off the critical path. Hatch is remote-friendly and open to candidates across the U.S. and Canada. The company is based in California, and candidates should be available during PST/PDT hours.

Requirements

Substantial experience leading mobile engineering organizations, including managing engineering managers.
A track record of setting technical direction and architecture governance across multiple concurrent product lines or teams.
Ability to operate through delegation, setting direction and holding accountability without being hands-on in every workstream.
Strong cross-functional communication skills and experience representing engineering to Product, Design, and executive stakeholders.
Experience building hiring pipelines and developing engineering leads.
Comfort with ambiguity and competing priorities across a broad remit.
A product-engineering mindset, with engineers actively contributing from ideation through implementation.
Collaborative approach and ability to improve the effectiveness of colleagues.
Ability to explain complex cross-team tradeoffs clearly.

Responsibilities

Manage the mobile engineering managers and establish supportive working relationships and a regular one-on-one cadence.
Own the weekly Mobile Strategy meeting and develop an understanding of each team's resourcing, roadmap, and delivery status.
Set direction and take accountability for mobile delivery, architecture, and cross-platform iOS and Android strategy across the organization.
Own mobile resourcing, escalations, hiring pipeline direction, and hiring decisions for open mobile roles.
Oversee software-quality direction in partnership with QA.
Shape and lead architecture governance and the architectural review and ADR processes, including technical bets that affect roadmap or resourcing.
Bring a mobile capacity view into roadmap planning.
Set direction for AI adoption and tooling efficiency across the mobile organization.
Build strong operating relationships with Product and Design partners and establish a cross-functional operating model involving Product, Design, Analytics, and other stakeholders.
Own staff development and feedback, including promotion decisions and escalations, and develop current and future engineering leads.
Champion recognition and team culture and build project-management and product-engineering capabilities across teams.
As capacity allows, take on select mobile individual-contributor work off the critical path to stay current.
