About The Position

The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) is seeking a Director of Education to lead its Education Office. This role involves overseeing the Energy Scholars Program, the Energy Studies Minor and its faculty committee, MITEI’s UROP activities, the Education newsletter, and the Open Learning portfolio. The Director will serve as the primary advisor on educational matters for MITEI’s leadership team and will be the main representative of MITEI’s education program to various MIT units, faculty, administrators, students, and member companies. Key responsibilities include student recruitment for the Energy Studies Minor, managing orientation events, campus preview weekends, student-company mixers, summer UROP, and other programs. The Director will also interact with MIT student clubs focused on energy, sustainability, and climate. Additionally, the role involves assisting with donor interactions to increase education funding, working with MITEI member companies to meet their educational objectives, managing MITEI’s Education funds, tracking enrollment and engagement statistics, ensuring timely completion of curricular reviews and reports for member companies, and supervising staff, including interns and part-time employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical/chemical science, or environmental science/policy.
  • A minimum of five years of experience administering a university-level education program in STEM.
  • Demonstrated experience working with undergraduate and PhD students.
  • Proven success in increasing student engagement.
  • Familiarity with managing open learning.
  • Familiarity with leading small teams (including hiring).
  • Familiarity with tracking budgets.
  • Familiarity with organizing activities.
  • Familiarity with giving oral presentations.

  • Advanced degree.
  • Background includes interaction with the private sector, either through work experience or having made connections between a university and external company stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with MIT’s educational programs, degree requirements, and administrative structure.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with MIT student clubs related to energy, sustainability, and climate.
  • Assist with donor interactions to grow MITEI’s education funding base.
  • Work with MITEI member companies to fulfill their educational goals.
  • Manage MITEI’s Education funds.
  • Track statistics on enrollment and engagement.
  • Ensure timely completion of required Energy Studies Minor and curricular reviews and reports for MITEI member companies.
  • Supervise an Associate Director and additional staff, including interns or part-time employees.
