About The Position

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking a Director for the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). This role involves providing state-of-the-art critical care, teaching students and trainees, and contributing to research initiatives. The Institute for Critical Care Medicine (ICCM) at Mount Sinai Health System is a leading critical care organization with a large training program, fostering collaboration to deliver exceptional patient care and advance critical care as a discipline. As an ICCM Intensivist and faculty member, you will provide top-tier critical care, teach and mentor the next generation of critical care professionals, and develop innovative research initiatives.

Requirements

  • Maintain current certification and licensure.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring critical care fellows.
  • Attendance at fellow conferences.
  • Teaching in fellowship training days, such as bootcamps, ultrasound courses, and SIM courses.
  • Give two lectures per academic year to the fellows.
  • Engagement in scholarly activities (at least two, within every 3 years): Presentations (extramural), Publications (research abstract, research paper, review article, systematic review article, editorial, book chapter, book, case report, etc.), Grand rounds (1 every 2 years), Serve on professional committees, educational organizations, journal reviewer, editorial board member, Creation of curricula, evaluation tools, didactic educational activities, or electronic educational materials, Innovations in education.
  • Registration + Attendance at the annual Mount Sinai GME meeting.
  • Completion of GME snippet (a focused learning activity for faculty).
  • Completion of fellow rotation evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Participation in biannual faculty meetings to discuss fellow performance.
  • Participation in Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
  • Clinical trials and drafting manuscripts for academic journals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide state-of-the-art, evidence-based, critical care at Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) by investigating, diagnosing, and treating acutely ill patients.
  • Perform treatments and procedures at the bedside, such as airway maintenance/intubation, bronchoscopy, cardioversion, point of care ultrasound, central line insertions, ACLS, and others in order to manage critically ill patients in the ICUs.
  • Have clinical duties as a full-time intensivist, providing 24/7 intensivist coverage across Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Hold an appointment as Professor in the Department of Medicine and be a member of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
  • As a .80 clinical FTE critical care faculty, be responsible for 10.4 shifts per month with a combination of day and night shifts, allocated according to critical care clinical effort.
  • Write detailed medical records for all critical care services and procedures provided to patients and submit to Charge Capture in a timely manner, in accordance with MSHS Assurance and Compliance Services Department’s policies.
  • Achieve an annual work-relative-value-unit (wRVU) target based on billable critical care services and procedures, with potential qualification for a productivity bonus.
  • Participate in clinical continuing education courses and workshops to expand competency in treatment and procedures.
  • Have health system responsibilities for academic and educational activities of the Division’s critical care programs, including faculty recruitment, evaluation, and retention; and oversight of education programs for trainees and students in the medical intensive care units.
  • Provide administrative leadership for the MICU, development of its faculty, and development of a coverage schedule.
  • Provide state of the art, evidence based critical care services to patients on the MICU and Division Consult Services.
  • Participate in committees and administrative functions to fully support efficient performance of the MICU program, Department and Medical Center.
  • Perform appropriate due diligence, in cooperation with Departmental leadership and Medical Center administration, in planning replacement or acquisition of equipment or technology.
  • Fully support the implementation of quality initiatives of the Departments and Medical Center.
  • Obtain exceptional clinical outcomes by promoting safety and quality through evidence-based medicine and excellent multidisciplinary communication, focusing on reducing length of stay and excess days in patients with respiratory failure and tracheostomy.
  • Achieve individual and team-based metrics for patient care which align with ICCM's quality incentive, including hand hygiene targets, CLABSI and CAUTI targets, central line and foley catheter utilization targets.
  • Promote safe, quality, and equitable care by participation in unit/team-specific quality improvement projects (USQI) and unit/team based diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) projects.
  • Participate in research activities including clinical trials and drafting manuscripts for academic journals. Research initiatives should be clinical in nature, data-driven, and may include participation in specific ICU or team-based projects.
