About The Position

SLC Management is seeking a Director, Management Equity Finance and Tax to support the financial and tax operations of its Management Equity Plan (MEP). This role is crucial for ensuring accurate financial reporting, tax compliance, and effective stakeholder communication across SLC. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of robust reporting and communication processes, meeting tight deadlines for the MEP at SLC Management. This position will ensure that management receives the necessary information for their personal tax obligations related to the MEP program and that the Sun Life group receives the required information for corporate tax purposes. Given the complexity of the MEP, close collaboration with internal and external business partners is essential to ensure the timely and controlled delivery of information and filings. An understanding of the diverse tax treatments for flow-through entities (such as partnerships/LLCs), corporations, and hybrid entities will be advantageous.

Requirements

  • CPA or equivalent designation strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in finance or tax roles, ideally within asset management or financial services with a strong tax component.
  • Strong curiosity, desire to learn, and resilience.
  • Experience working with tax-transparent entities and their associated tax reporting is a strong benefit.
  • Strong understanding of tax-to-IFRS differences and legal entity structures.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of the drivers of income versus taxable income for individuals and corporates within the SLC group to support the MD in preparing MEP-related financial commentary based on taxable income and distributions across the US, Canada, and RoW.
  • Analyze and reconcile differences between accounting and taxable income, preparing simplified summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with internal and external tax advisors and operational tax teams to ensure timely and accurate tax filings and payments for individuals, including US state composite returns for Non-Residents and PTET elections.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of information from SLC affiliates and corporate entities for both corporate tax and personal tax reporting.
  • Support the tax settlement process and collaborate with SLC and Corporate Treasury on the timing and amount of cash requirements.
  • Act as a liaison between HR, Finance, Corporate Tax, Affiliate Tax, and external advisors to gather and disseminate financial and tax data.
  • Coordinate with affiliates, external tax advisors, and the SLF Corporate Tax team to understand various data needs and develop a robust data repository for efficient information sharing.
  • Prepare quarterly tax analysis and commentary to support MEP participant communication, filings, and payments on account.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of streamlined reporting and communication processes, ensuring that implemented systems generate synergies.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of tax provision and settlement workflows.
