About The Position

VHB’s Florida offices are seeking a Director of Landscape Architecture – Florida to lead our growing Florida team in Gulf Coast and Orlando. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. Our past and present clients include higher education institutions, healthcare providers, State DOT’s, municipalities, and private interests throughout the eastern United States.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) or Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA).
  • 15+ years of landscape architecture experience with demonstrated professional growth of increased project responsibilities from design through construction.
  • Landscape Architect registration / license in the State of Florida.
  • LEED, SITES, ENV SP, or similar Certification.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff across multiple offices or teams.
  • Strong marketing experience with measurable results.
  • Established relationships with local public and private sector clients (state, county, local agencies, and developers) as well as relevant industry organizations (ASLA, ULI, etc.)
  • Experience with applicable software such as Adobe Suite, Microsoft suite, Revit/modeling software.
  • Recognized as a leader and authority in the field of landscape architecture.
  • Proven track record in successfully leading multiple offices or teams across geographic regions.
  • Strong financial management skills with experience delivering profitable, sustainable results.
  • Broad expertise in landscape architecture and planning, covering both public and private sectors.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to mentor staff while managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Superior ability in collaborative problem-solving with stakeholders, clients, and internal teams.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with excellent written, graphic, and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent project coordination, planning, and project management skills.
  • Skills to implement the integrated services approach. Comprehensive understanding of design, details, and construction drawing preparation including site layout, grading, drainage, and planting.
  • Knowledge of landscape architectural construction including codes and development regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction landscape and hardscape materials and detailing. Detail drawings, sections, and material specifications.
  • Knowledge of ornamental and native plants in the Southeast region.
  • Experience with green initiative programs and low-impact design (LEED, SITES, etc.).
  • Excellent innovative design skills.
  • Comfortable in coordinating input from various organizations for public/private collaboration, including multi-discipline project efforts collaborating with allied professionals such as architects, civil engineers, and planners.
  • Leverages use of technology and AI as tools to enhance project delivery and team growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing landscape architecture team with staff in both the Gulf Coast and Orlando offices.
  • Drive market growth in Central Florida and the Gulf Coast, identifying opportunities that leverage shared resources and expertise.
  • Generate new business development opportunities and lead high-profile pursuits across all markets, focused in Florida.
  • Participate as an integral member of VHB’s Landscape Architecture practice, which includes collaboration and work sharing with VHB’s offices throughout the East Coast.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and corporate leadership to define and execute strategies aligned with VHB’s strategic plan.
  • Participate in go/no-go and partnering decisions on strategic pursuits.
  • Maintain and grow relationships with key clients and oversee major project assignments, focused in Florida for a variety of private and public landscape architectural projects (e.g., retail, single- and multi-family residential, corporate campuses, mixed use developments, academic buildings, streetscapes, parks, plazas, public spaces).
  • Contribute to development of an annual business plan, ensuring alignment and coordinated execution.
  • Plan, organize, manage and supervise complex landscape architecture projects in Florida.
  • Manage, plan, develop, organize, and implement project design concepts and criteria throughout all phases of project work, from planning, conceptual design, design development, and construction documentation through construction administration.
  • Establish and monitor budgets to assess profitability. Monitor projects for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule.
  • Perform project reviews and quality control audits to measure the quality of project deliverables, investigates any quality problems, and modifies project plans as needed.
  • Exercise independent judgment analyzing all technical aspects of the project, defining the scope, selecting problems for investigation, developing concepts and approaches, and recommending landscape architectural design solutions.
  • Make verbal presentations and representation of projects during pursuits and ongoing projects.
  • Participate as a design charrette team member on multi-disciplinary team.
  • Travel between offices (Tampa, Orlando, and Sarasota) and clients/projects.
