About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President, Labour Relations, the Director, Labour Relations, provides functional leadership in the development and implementation of Labour Relations strategies. Accountable for all key Labour Relations strategies, including supporting Labour negotiations, advice and counsel by partnering with business leaders to develop and execute labour relations strategies in support of the organization’s workforce plans.

Requirements

  • Post secondary education in business, HR or related discipline, preferably with a CHRM or CHRP designation
  • 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources with a focus on Industrial or Labour Relations
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business initiatives into clear, consistent and systematic LR strategy
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on verbal reasoning, negotiation, resolution of issues and listening skills.
  • Superior leadership and project management skills with proven ability to lead a team and deliver objectives on time and within budget
  • A detail oriented, collaborative, proactive and results oriented style with demonstrated success in leading and supporting negotiations, mediation and collective bargaining
  • Proven influencing, judgment, decision making and cooperative problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain working relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
  • Needs to have a highly effective and persuasive personality, be a team player and leader, and an excellent facilitator of action plans
  • Strong computer skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest personal, professional and ethical standards
  • Advanced, thorough knowledge of relevant employment and workplace legislation

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading aspects of labour relations for a specific unionized colleague population, under the direction of the Vice President, Labour Relations
  • Develop strong, constructive working relationships with labor union representatives
  • Partner with the business leaders to manage the development and implementation of long and short term strategic labour objectives
  • Lead a team of LR Managers and LR Specialist in the administration of key labour relations functions, including grievance management, dispute resolution and the development and implementation of labour relations initiatives.
  • Effectively lead and support the negotiations process to gain a unified point of view, achieve desired outcomes, and effectuate bargaining strategies that enable business objectives using a collaborative and integrative approach with key senior leadership constituencies and other Human Resource functions
  • Represent the labour relations department on cross-functional committees for strategic business initiatives, as required
  • Effectively partner with legal counsel, HR partners and senior operations leaders to provide strategic advice and counsel for internal clients regarding labour laws/relations and union contractual obligations to further business objectives
  • Support labour legal counsel in grievances, arbitrations and in tribunal proceedings
  • Drive performance objectives, attract and retain talent, maintain compliance and ensure administration accuracy within assigned team; create an environment that fosters leadership, opportunity and overall success
  • Manage and develop colleagues to ensure timelines are reached and strategy is executed by way of training, mentoring and providing guidance to direct reports
  • Keep apprised of federal, provincial and local labour laws and regulations in order to ensure statutory compliance
