About The Position

The Winchester Medical Center (WMC) Laboratory Director is responsible for the oversight of the Clinical Laboratory including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, and Molecular departments as well as Phlebotomy and support staff functions. The Laboratory Director is responsible for assuring that department safety, quality, and fiscal outcomes are achieved by ensuring appropriate staffing levels and implementing processes based on best practice. The Laboratory Director serves as the department leader and works collaboratively with WMC hospital departments and Valley Health System (VHS) corporate entities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as administrative laboratory director in moderate-to-large volume hospital-based laboratory required
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent required
  • Knowledgeable of daily, monthly and annual laboratory budgeting, operations, financial monitoring.
  • Current knowledge of laboratory staffing for volume solutions, productivity assessment and integration of TJC patient safety goals required.
  • Current knowledge of and compliance with all laboratory CAP requirements.
  • Demonstrated competence in providing service to patients of all ages consistent with CAP and TJC patient safety standards.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and computer skills, both written and verbal, to lead a workgroup while setting the example for professionalism, data driven decision making, and up to date scientific knowledge for the delivery of consistent excellence in patient care.
  • Ability to support Corporate Laboratory Director, entity Vice Presidents and outside customers in quality systems management, development and retention of human resources, and all laboratory initiatives both intra and interdepartmental required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and supports infrastructure of clinical laboratory; serves as leadership liaison for operations of contracted services.
  • Fosters an environment of service excellence and quality for patients, physicians, clients, and community.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to technical, safety, and legal requirements as established by governing and regulatory agencies, including but not limited to, The Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists and OSHA.
  • Provides expert input and effective communication of technological issues, methodology, and results to internal and external customers.
  • Develops, implements and reviews policies, procedures and protocols for areas of responsibility.
  • Supports development and implementation of effective performance improvement initiatives within area(s) of responsibility.
  • Establishes key performance indicators to measure and track laboratory operation deliverables to include technical, quality, financial, and other operational metrics
  • Develops laboratory leadership staff by fostering an accountable, collaborative approach to departmental leadership.
  • Directs and supports laboratory employee relations including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, evaluations/competency, corrective action, and professional development.
  • Demonstrates good stewardship of resources in capital and operational expenditures; prepares annual budget and reviews/maintains financial performance.
  • Provides support and accountability for departmental, facility and organizational initiatives around patient safety, patient satisfaction, and employee engagement.
  • Develops and implements strategic and business plans; oversees development and implementation of strategies for accomplishing departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Develops and maintains effective departmental communication through staff meetings and other communication forums. Facilitates the flow of information through the continuum of the organization structure.
  • Facilitates resolution of issues involving staff, patients, physicians, and clients.
  • Participates in hospital based and corporate committees as appropriate.
