About The Position

The Director of Inpatient Nursing for the Women’s and Infants Service Line provides visionary leadership across assigned inpatient units, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compassionate care that aligns with Sutter Health’s commitment to patient-centered excellence. This leader is responsible for advancing clinical quality, enhancing the patient experience, engaging the workforce, and improving operational performance within maternal, newborn, and women’s health services. In collaboration with physicians, medical staff, and interdisciplinary leaders, the Director fosters a culture of teamwork, shared responsibility, and professional nursing practice. The role guides operational strategy and resource management to tackle complex challenges, optimize care delivery processes, and achieve measurable outcomes in quality, safety, and patient satisfaction. Aligned with Sutter Health’s leadership competencies, the Director works with senior leaders to develop and implement strategic plans, both short- and long-term, that support system and medical center priorities such as access, growth, innovation, and organizational effectiveness. Through structural empowerment, the Director promotes nursing autonomy, shared governance, professional development, and evidence-based practice to boost caregiver engagement and sustain high performance. The Director establishes and oversees policies, procedures, and care delivery frameworks that ensure reliability, consistency, and patient- and family-centered care. Financial stewardship is essential, including developing and managing operating and capital budgets, responsibly allocating resources, and proactively managing financial performance and variances. Through visible, values-based leadership, the Director of Inpatient Nursing fosters a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, supporting Magnet principles and advancing the mission and reputation of Sutter Alta Bates Women’s and Infants' Services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • RN-Registered Nurse of California
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
  • 12 years of recent relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of nursing operations and workflows, and how the department’s process/workflow impacts other department operations.
  • Understands business and operational requirements, demonstrating ability to design and establish goals to meet long and short-term objectives.
  • Demonstrates credible leadership presence, with the ability to respond to questions with logic, clarity, calmness and authority; and the ability to motivate and engage others.
  • Ability to build and establish effective working partnership with employees, peers and leaders to achieve business objectives.
  • Collaboration skills to facilitate open sharing of information and cooperation with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle difficult circumstances and make sound business decisions with little direction.
  • Working knowledge of wage and hour laws.
  • Demonstrates commitment to providing exceptional customer service and responding to customer needs/requests in a prompt, courteous manner.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey concepts and communicate information or issues in a manner that is readily understood by management and employees.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver presentations to a variety of audiences.
