About The Position

The Director, HR Service for UVA Health Medical Center serves as the senior HR leader and strategic advisor supporting Medical Center executives within a complex, fast-paced, 24/7 academic healthcare environment. Leading a team of Human Resources Business Partners (HRBPs), this role is responsible for translating organizational priorities into people strategies that advance workforce effectiveness, leadership capability, employee engagement, talent retention, and operational excellence. Reporting to the Senior Director, HR Service, the Director partners closely with Medical Center leaders and Human Resources Communities of Expertise (COEs) to develop and execute human capital strategies aligned with the goals of UVA Health, UVA Health Medical Center, and UVA Human Resources. The role provides leadership across workforce planning, organizational design, leadership development, employee relations, performance management, succession planning, organizational effectiveness, and change management initiatives that support both immediate operational priorities and long-term business objectives. The Director ensures a consistent, high-quality HR service delivery experience through the effective leadership and development of HRBPs and serves as a trusted advisor on complex workforce matters with broad organizational impact. The successful candidate brings strong business acumen, healthcare workforce knowledge, and the ability to influence senior leaders through data-driven decision making and strategic consultation. This position requires regular onsite presence five days per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field.
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive human resources experience.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with senior leaders on strategic workforce and organizational initiatives.
  • Experience leading and developing HR teams in a complex organization.
  • Experience driving change management, organizational effectiveness, and workforce planning initiatives.
  • Experience within a health system, academic medical center, hospital, or other complex, highly regulated environment.
  • Experience supporting large-scale healthcare operations and clinical workforces.
  • Experience using workforce analytics and business metrics to influence organizational decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary HR advisor to Medical Center executives, providing consultation on organizational effectiveness, workforce planning, leadership capability, employee engagement, succession planning, and workforce risk mitigation.
  • Develop workforce strategies that address critical talent needs, succession readiness, workforce shortages, leadership continuity, and anticipated organizational growth.
  • Lead HR strategy and consultation for organizational transformations, departmental restructures, service line expansions, workforce redesign initiatives, integrations, and regulatory or operational changes.
  • Leverage workforce metrics, engagement data, turnover trends, vacancy rates, productivity indicators, and labor market insights to guide decision-making and improve organizational outcomes.
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of HR Business Partners supporting clinical, operational, and administrative functions across the Medical Center.
  • Ensure HRBP support models effectively meet the needs of a 24/7 healthcare environment, balancing strategic partnership with responsive operational support and issue resolution.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and professional development that strengthens HRBP capabilities in executive consultation, employee relations, workforce analytics, organizational effectiveness, and change management.
  • Promote consistency, accountability, and a customer-centered approach to HR service delivery while ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and values.
  • Collaborate with HR Communities of Expertise, including Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, Employee Relations, Talent Management, and HR Service, to deliver integrated workforce solutions.
