About The Position

Howard University Hospital is seeking a Director, Graduate Medical Education (GME) to lead the operations and administrative management of our GME program — including program design, development, implementation, and compliance. This is an opportunity to shape physician training at a Level 1 Trauma Center. You will provide strategic and operational leadership for Howard University Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education program. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, you will oversee program development and evaluation, ensure accreditation and regulatory compliance, manage the GME budget, lead the GME team, and serve as the central point of coordination between academic departments and affiliate partners.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university. In lieu of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience in GME accreditation and operations will be considered.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience in GME operations.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience as a program director.
  • Knowledge of GME programs and the workings of postgraduate medical education.
  • Knowledge of standard accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management and creating/managing budgets and business plans.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and motivate a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
  • Proven program management and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, HIPAA, and federal and local regulatory requirements as they pertain to GME programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and oversight for the development, implementation, and evaluation of GME programs, ensuring appropriate documentation of all data required by the institution and oversight agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME accreditation standards, institutional policies and procedures, and licensing board requirements and protocols.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the continued development and expansion of the GME program.
  • Lead GME staff, including selection, counseling, termination, and development.
  • Provide accurate information on resident schedules and rotations in support of GME reimbursement from Medicare, the Veterans Administration, and others; ensure faculty document their supervision of residents/fellows in the medical record in accordance with regulatory bodies; create resident schedules in accordance with ACGME guidelines; and ensure residents obtain the identification numbers required for ordering tests, labs, and medication.
  • Review credentialing requirements and maintain personnel records for assigned trainees in the institutional database, ensuring learning objectives are met through an appropriate blend of supervised patient care, clinical teaching, and didactic education.
  • Develop and support Residency Program personnel, advocate for program resources and financial support, and manage the GME budget with an annual review to ensure funding of all elements required to meet ACGME standards.
  • Facilitate communication between academic departments and affiliate partners regarding program initiatives and educational activities.
  • Prepare reports related to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) billing and DGME/IGME protocols.
  • Direct the activities of hospital affiliate staff as related to the GME program.
