About The Position

The Director, Global Tax is responsible for managing Sun Life’s Global Minimum Tax (GMT) compliance and GMT-related planning and initiatives. This role involves ensuring GMT compliance policies and procedures align with OECD Pillar Two regulations and Canada’s Global Minimum Tax Act. The position requires assessing Sun Life's exposure to GMT top-up taxes and filing obligations across all jurisdictions, overseeing the filing of GMT returns globally, and coordinating with business units and finance teams to gather necessary data and documentation. The Director will perform tax research and technical analyses, develop Sun Life’s positions on GMT issues, and assess the GMT impact of specific transactions, collaborating with internal and external advisors as needed. Additionally, the role involves providing guidance and training to stakeholders on GMT requirements, managing documentation for audit purposes, monitoring legislative updates, and managing the GMT quarterly provision process, including internal controls and tax forecasting models. The Director will also manage and develop tax professionals on the GMT team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive tax experience in a large multinational corporation and/or major accounting firm
  • CPA designation required
  • Technical knowledge of OECD Global Minimum Tax rules and Canada’s Global Minimum Tax Act, as applicable to a Canadian multinational group
  • Ability to pick up new/ changes to tax legislation, understand the relevant law and synthesize this with business facts and circumstances to provide actionable advice
  • Strong proficiency in tax accounting/ financial reporting under IFRS
  • Proven experience implementing process improvements, including experience leveraging technology to implement automated solutions
  • Strong project management skills, including directing a team and ability to balance workload and priorities, coordinating outsourcing engagements, as well as influencing people in other teams to meet deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - must be able to communicate technical information clearly and catered to various audiences/ stakeholders
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment

Nice To Haves

  • completion of a MTax program or CPA Canada In Depth Tax Course is strongly preferred
  • Understanding of the asset management and insurance business is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Ensure GMT compliance policies and procedures are aligned with OECD Pillar Two regulations and Canada’s Global Minimum Tax Act
  • Assess Sun Life's exposure to GMT top-up taxes and filing obligations across all jurisdictions, including overseeing the filing of GMT returns globally
  • Coordinate with business units and finance teams to gather necessary data and documentation
  • Perform tax research and technical analyses in developing Sun Life’s positions on GMT issues and assessing the GMT impact of specific transactions, in collaboration with the Global Tax Advisory team or external tax advisors where necessary
  • Provide guidance and training to stakeholders, including business units and management, on GMT requirements, significant risk areas, and expected tax impacts
  • Manage documentation and evidence gathering for audit purposes
  • Monitor legislative updates and perform assessments of impacts to Sun Life, including providing recommendations on any changes needed to the compliance process
  • Manage GMT quarterly provision process including internal controls requirements
  • Maintain tax forecasting models to provide accurate and impactful financial analyses/ insights
  • Manage and develop tax professionals on the GMT team
